; Taking into consideration the advanced period ol the month, and the broken weather which we have had, and which, following upouan, exceptionally long period of fine and dry, has been all, the nlore felt, the business-of the past week:.has been.,very fair. la spirits there has been little or no alteration. Brandy, of the ordinary run of accepted brands, has been soil-., ing miderately well, indebted to the scarcity oralmost complete absenco of Hennessy in case from the market. That favourite brand is eagerly taken up on any occasion (which is rare now) of a parcel being offered, as dealers are nearly minus all stock. Bulk, is not in equal; nor anything like equal demand. In. whisky there continued still a. good continuous sale of such kinds as are iv favour. Any usquebaugh of doubtful lineage; it may bo safely prophesied, will not prove good stock. The ruu of the trade is on prime descriptions - heather brands. Genevais exceedingly dull. Hum is dull also. Ale is described by some as being fiat as ditchwater. It may be that it may receive better attention as summer approaches, and that season is now close at hand. Stout is in very much the same condition, witli the advantage of being lower in stock. Stocks of both, us compared with, those-ol last year, are: Hhds., 71; as against 2.1; casks and cases, 2530, as against 2585. Wine is, on all hands, proclaimed stagnant. The average' sold, in trade and small parcels, has certainly not been what it was wont to be, and stocks are comparatively large, the preseut number of cases in bond being 4128, as against 2301 at the corresponding period last year. In tei, there has been some little movement during the week, in anticipation of tho new season's arriving shortly. The sales have been in half-chests and boxes, and easier prices have been accepted, for the benefit of getting clearances effected. In sugar, some parcels have changed hands this week. Stocks still remain full, but prices arc quite, maintained. In salmon; there have been considerable shipments received from America latety. They have come te an already-glutted market, and although Os may be regarded as a full quotation^ they are difficult to move even at that; arid Scotch salmon, invoiced at a much higher rate, can only, of course, when sold at all, be, sold at a loss. The season for the consumption of. such goods is, however, approaching, and butcher; meat is high—so high that, on economical grounds, it; might be suitable for consumers to find a preference in favour of salmon. Ling is at present out of the market. Salt, inconsequence of high, freights, bs-; conies of exceptionally high cost; and altaough high; rates are ruling, they do not proportionally meet this item of freight, nor, in fact, co/er cost. In pro-. visions, there is nothing to report of any consequence. Hams and bicon, of good or prime quality, Colonial, are so scarce that it niakca the. few Irish importations that reach the market to be appreciated by those who are vyilling to. pay.for. them. Cheese is still difficult to be'had. Butter is lowering gradually in price. Dried fruits ate 6till scarce and rulinghigh. Currauts are in demand as sd, the supply; deficient, and likely to be so—the pricelikely therefore to further advance. Sultanas are quoted at 9d, Valencia raisins at 7d, and Elerae at 7jd. Hops continue scarce—good samples of Kenta, 18745, are taken up at once, and fetch 3s 4d, but few such samples are arriving. Tasmanian has been freely taken in the absence of Kents, and have been sold at from 2a 3d.to, 2a 6d. Nelson hops suffer from low quotations, varying from Islodto2s Id, but these who . know the ground oh, which the plants are raised, predict' for them' a price exceeding even Tasmanian. They applaud the flavour, and assert that they have been suffering from an imputation of rahkness, whiuh is supposed to attend the; young plants, until they lmve been mellowed by age. This previous rankness is denied at all, but assuming it to have existed, it must soon, by the effluxion of •years, have outlived this fault. ; Tho same ordeal has been undergone by the Tasmanian, • and long, aso it was undergone by the Kent plants, that; have been in the ground now for. hundreds of. years Caudles are not plentiful, Belmonts selling freely at from 10>d to IOJd, and even higher. Kerosene is in very slight demand—stocks extra full. Galvanised iron is very firm, holders, beyond all concession, holding for £35 for parcels. In cement sales are taking; place at prices equal to 20s. In galvanised wire sales have been making at good-prices lor tho higher numbers up to 10. In breadstuffs and grain there has been no alteration in prices; a slight uncertainty, appears to prevail. ■
