The report of the Registrar-General for the month of May contains the following table, showing the number of births, the; actual mortality of males and females, ani. the proportion of deaths to population, m-, the boroughs of Auckland, Thames,: Wet> ; lington, Nelson, Christchurch, Dsnedin, and* Hokitika:— • ■ ■ :

Mr Spencer Baird, Commissioner of Fisheries for the United States, wrote to Mr P. F,. Stoddart, of Hampden, while in Scotland, to say that he is "engaged in hatching the Californian salmon on a large scale for infcwK duction into the waters of the Eastern, States, and expects to receive 6,000,000 eggs, before the season is over. This is a species cmi* uently suited to Australian and New Zealand •waters, and the eggs can easily be obtained k? I large numbers."
