NORTH TAIERI PLOUGHING MATCH.

The annual ploughing match of tho North Taieri Agricultural Society took place on Tuesday, the 22nd ult, in Mr Andrew Waters'a paddock, at the foot of the North Taieri Hills. The weather was fine, and the ground was in most excellent condition for ploughing. The attendance was not quite so good as on_ former occasions, but an unusual amount of interest was excited in the work, a great portion of which was performed by the new labour-saving double-furrow plough. There were fifteen of these ploughs, and one acre was allotted to each, while to each of the single ploughs—of which there were ftfteen^-one-tliird of an acre was allotted. The following is a list of the successful competitors. •

Class A.—Single-furrow ploughs, open to all comers. Ist prize, £5; 2nd, £4. There were six entries for this. John Cullen (owner, James Cullon), 1; Frank Black, Tokomairiro, 2; James Howden, commended. The other winners were: Jaiiies M'Conochie, James Gilbert, and William Drysdale. The majority of the ploughs used in this class were Pontons, and the depth of furrow cut was Gin.

Class B. —Prizetakers at any former match excluded. Ist prize, £4 ; 2nd, £3 ; 3rd, £2. John Shaw, 1; James Todd, 2; Eobert Miller, commended. Class C. —For juniors, not exceeding 20 years of age. Ist prize, £3 ; 2nd,'£L _ , There was also an extra prize given for this class by Mr Butler, of- Mosgiel, who gave a halter for the best finish. ' '

Ist prize, £6, given by the Society, and a double-furrow plough, presented by Messrs Eeid and Gray, of Dunedin, valued at £25; 2nd, £5 : 3rd, £3; 4th, £2 ; sth, £1. Messrs Smellie and Young took both first and second prize ; Thomas Elliott, 3rd ; J. and A. 'Robertson, 4th ; Thomas Miller, sth. The ploughs which took the prizes were manufactured by Messrs Eeid and Gray, of Dunedin. : ; .
