Hough ton and Co.'s steamer Wanganui, Captain Prater, returned yesterday from her Meekly trip to the Bluff. She has made it in the usual time— three and a half days, and reports that the upward passage was made agjinst a severe S.E. gale, and high beam sea, and henco she did not reach the Bluff until five hours after time. Discharged, aud chipped a full cargo, and left at 4.30 p.m.; Hue weather favoured her down, and she arrived at 9 a.m. yesterday. Capt. The ketch Catlin took her departure for Catlin's River yesterday afternoon.' The fishing cutter Dolly Varden left yesterday afternoon on her first cruise in Southern waters. She is going to fish upon the ground.-, about Stewart's Island. By our Melbourne files per Albion we are informed of the arrival of the clipper ship Buchess of Edinburgh at Melbourne from London. She i» a new vessel, on her fir.t voyage, and is the first of a new line of ships intended for the Melbourne trade. It will be, perhaps, remembered that the Duchess of Edinburgh started on her first voyage last September, but, being dismasted, liai to put into Corunna, and thence was towed back to Loudon to relit. She finally left on Marcii 20th, and, arriving at Melbourne on the 10th June, made the passage in ninety-one day*. It was sadly disastrous. On the 2nd June, Bhu being then in lat. 42 south, long. 33 E., a.tremendous S. W. gale came on, and a frightful sea got up. Tiic ship being deeply laden made bad weather of it, and was again and again pooped. Whilst siil was being shortened, one of tlio hands, named William Welch, A.8., fell from aloft, and sustained injuries of which he died a few hours afterwards, in the evening of the sumo day a tremendous sea pooped her and swept overboard Mr M'Kay, the third officer. He was never seen again. During the night, the ship was swept by a succession of seas, and once was almost buried by the volume of water that absolutely rolled over her. Everything ntoveable on dcclv wus carried overboard, and much havoc caused besides. The front of the poop was burst in and the cabin and lazarctle Hooded, two of the boats were washed overboard, and the others more or less damaged as they lay upon the skids, and the crew were Hooded out of the topgallant, forecastle. The Duchess of Edinburgh is 1093 tons register, aud is described as a very handsome and well appointed clipper ship

We notice that the brig Alarm, commanded by our old acquaintance, Captain Hodge, arrived at Lyttelton from Newcastle on Friday last. As we stated in a former issue, the Alarm is coming here to be converted into a coal-hulk.

The Albion Company's fine ship Dunedin, still commanded by Captain Whitsou, was towed into port by the Geelong last evening. She is from Auckland, to which port she conveyed cargo and immigrants from Londuu.. She left Auckland on June 21st, and cleared Cape Colville at midnight. Had light northerly winds to the East Cape, which was passed on the morning of the 23rd alt. Then the breeze hauled to the southward, and freshened to a heavy gale, lasting three daya, the Ship head-reaching the whole time under lower top-sails. Two days of calms followed, then light northerly winds to the Ist July, when the ship was off the Waitaki. Then she again encountered a heavy southerly gale, which compelled her to headreach for 24 hours. Calm weather succeeded, aud held until Saturday morningl, when a light N. W. breeze took her to within sight of the Heads at 11 p.m. She lay becalmed until this afternoon, when the Geelong towed her in. There are 250 tons of railway iron on board. She passed the ship Leucadia off the Wailaki. SUPPLEMENTARY SUMMARY. Since the Summary in another place was compiled* several arrivals and departures have taken place, and have swelled the tonnage of the month to 20,34(5 inwards and 19,486 outwards, thus placing it more than 2000 tons each way iv advance of the tonnages of the month Maj -June. Of the arrivals the more notable were those of the Union Company's steamer Taupj from Glasgow, aud the American barque Crusader frum New York. The Taupo made a good run of 03 days, called at St. Vincent to coal, but passed the Cape by. Hie passage was uneventful, and the running made a good average. The Taupo is in all respects the counterpart of the Hawea. She arrived here on Friday last, as also did the Crusader, after a passage of 114 days, it waa marked by fair moderate weather throughout, and was absolutely unincidencal. Yesterday an arrival intcrprovincial took place, that of tho Alb'on Company's ship Dunedin, from Auckland. Of original cargo shipped at London, she has several hundred tons of railway iron for this port, and hence her coming here. 01 departures that of the ship Leucadia is the only one of special moment. She left for China on Friday last. : ' VE-SSLS IN PORT.
