Messrs H. Houghton and Co's steamer Express returned from Southern Ports yesterday afternoon, and alter just earing steam off the Part to land mails, went on to Duneiin. She will leave again for the South to* morrow. - - The schooner Dauntless sailed for Oamaru yesterday The schooner Pioneer and ketch defiance, the one bound for Shag Poiut, tl\e other to Kakanui, went to Bea yesterday. The brigantine Sea Gull, bound to the Blnff, same down from Lunedin yesterday and anchored in the Bay, to wait for a wind to take her South. The cutter Jane sailed for Shag Point yesterday. In accordance with pre-arrangemont the good old time-honoured tfarbour Steam Company was absorbed yesterday by the new aud more pretentious " Union," which may be almost l.kened to a Phconix rising from the ashes of the old firm. The simile holds good, became the act of dissolution was entirely voluntary, whilst the resuscitating process had been provided for before the demise occurred. We were aware that on the l3t inst. the new Company's name would be substituted for that of the old one, aud so it happened The one is dead, and yet survives in a younjr, vigorous, and most fitting succeaaor of a prosperous firm which through weal and woe shared the fortunes of Duueckn during many evenful years. How it prospered, and what it attained to, is now manifested in the Union Steamship Company—to which wo tender our very good wishes, at the same time hoping that it will do credit to its progenitor. The Union Company's steamer Bruce made a Btart {or Timaru yesterday,'and the weather having moderated, she will, we daresay, be subjected to no untoward detention in the roadstead of that name. We notice that the clipper barque Waratah is advertised to sail for Hobart Town to-morrow. As perootice elsewhere, to-day is the last day for rendering claims against the ship Andrew Reid. - ■ . The new schooner Christina, lately from Auckland, - Is advertised for sale or charter. She is a very efficient vessel at all points, and profitable to boot. Having completed loading transhipments t>r Oamaru, the tchooner Jane Anderson hauled away from the Earl of Zetland yesterday, and anchored in • ■■. the stream. She will probably sail to-day. The s.s. Lady of the Lake arrived at Dunodin at 11 ' o'clock last night, with a full cargo of gniin. She left ' Port Molyneux at 1 p.m., and had Btrong southerly winds, with heavy sea on, the run up.
