Monday, 28th June. (Before A. C. Begg and J. S. Hieks;>n, Esqs., J.P.s Drunkenx>;ss.—Jaines Ryley, having been locked up .since Saturday night, was discharged "with a caution. Andrew Lock, on bail, not appearing, was fined ss, and Peter Poison, also on bail and not appearing, estreated his security —10s. George Campbell, arrested in George street, and William Hall, apprehended in "Walker street, were each fined in the minimum penalty, Peter Johnston, apprehended in King street, and Robert Nelson, who had "three previous convictions against him, were «ach ordered to pay 10s, in default, 48 hours' imprisonment. .• A Dkixkex Husband.—Daniel M'Callum y>' was placed in the dock, charged, on the infor- * mation of his wife, Margaret M'Oallum, a sickly-looking woman, with having, on the 25th June, at Kensington, threatened to cut her throat. —Prosecntrix stated that her husband, ■who was a drunkard, had been in the habit of cruelly ill-u*ing her, and she recently sought the protection of the Court and obtained an order under the Married Women's Protection Act. She then left him, and taking with her her two children, went to reside in Kensington. He discovered where she was living, and on the landlady refusing him admittance, made use of .tie language complained of. — Prisoner, ■when asked what he had to say for himself, asserted that these proceedings were concocted for the purpose of getting him out of the country.—The Bench were convinced that he had behaved in a most disgraceful manner to his wife, and he would therefore be bound over, iv his own recognisance of £25, to keep the piace towards her for six months. Coxjuual Differences.— Edward Poole, ■ c arier, was summoned by his wife, Margaret Poole, who appeared with a pledge of affection In her amis, for having, on the ll!th February, deserted her'and three children, leaving them ■without means of support. Complainant stated her husband had represented to her that he Lad a house furnished at Awamoko for her, but she had no desire to go. In answer to defendant whether he had ever ill-used her, she said, " Yes, with his tongue." Defendant stated .that his wife would persist in living with | her father, and he (defendant) had no desire k to live with his father-in-law. He had been | summoned to tlit; Resident Magistrate's Court ■ on the 10th February last, and the case was X dismissed on her promising to go up country m with him. He had a house at Awamoko, anil F ~was willing to take her there. — Complainant ' said she had no clothing but what she wore, ■ iaud therefore would not go.—The Bench said {hat, inasmuch as she would not leave her father rto go with her husband, the case would be dismissed. —Defendant asked leave to take his • children with him.—Mr Begg: That question "ds not before the Bench at present. If you "wish to take your children, you will have to make a formal application. A Vicious Dog.—Daniel Hefferman was -summoned for allowing a dog to be at large ■which rushed at persons passing near it, —Mr R. B. Martin stated that the dog had rushed him; and the Bench fined defendant ss, and ■ -ordered the dog to be killed. . Breach of the Licensing Ordinance.—J. F. Jones, hotel-proprietor, was summoned for .allowing prostitutes to assemble in his licensed louse. —Defendant admitted that they were there unknown to him, but he had since given orders to exclude them.—Constable Hydes rstated that about midnight of the 15th inst. he heard a loud noise when passing defendant's hotel, and on entering the commercial room, •observed a number of loose women, two of -whom were fighting in a cornel'. —Inspector Mallard explained that there had been no complaints against defendant before. —Dismissed •with a caution.
