SANITARY IMPROVEMENTS.

TO THK "EDITOR. Sir—Your comments in this day's paper on the state of Grange street (which are applicable to many other streets in this flourishing city) are such as to induce any reflective mind to snij- • gest a remedy. It is nought but the greed- of individuals (often wealthy men) that leads to the formation of such narrow thoroughfares, and consequent overcrowding. Would-it not be well for the City Council at once to pass a bye-law "that no street will for the future be taken over by the Corporation that is less than a chain wide." Something of this~sort would have a good effect. Look at the St. Kilda Road across the swamp to the sandhills : it is a standing disgrace to those who laid it off; but possibly they may have taken into consideration the fact that there is a cemetery close at Hand to receive the victims of their avarice. THE SMOKE NUISANCE. TO THK EDITOR. Sir—-We think that hardly sufficient prominence has been given to the smoke which overclouds Dnnedin, as a source of the various disorders of the respiratory organs. It is not generally known, or believed, that the volumes of dense smoke poured out of the numerous tall chimney-stalks in our midst, may be economised, and consumed, much to the advantage of the proprietors of the various works and manufactories, as well as to that of the inhabitants generally. The following extract, out of a home papei, will show how they meet these cases in the home country : —" There was a prosecution at the same court on Monday, for the use of a furnace so constructed as not to consume its own smoke. The defendant was a proprietor of steam saw mills, and as he had been previously convicted of a similar offence, a penalty of £10, and £1 13s Ud costs was imposed.— Yours, &c., w _____ Saw Dust.
