A Wellington, June 25fch Another p).ase of the toll-gate question has been settled by a deci,ion of the Ohief Justice A coach proprietor appealed against the decision of the Resident Magistrate. His Honour decided against Youojt upon all the points raised, holding that the General Toll-gates Act did apply to Kaiwara toll-gate ; that a specific demand was not necessary to the creation .of a debt; tha; the debt was created by passing through the toll-gate; and that an action would lie for debt so created. The appeal was dismissed with costs. Auckland, June 2Sth. Pears are entertained for the safety of the schooner Pacific, which left Tiinaru for the Alauukau on tne 3rd instant, the day previous to the destructive gale. She has not siuce been heard of. She had a car<r O of wheat, which was insured for £1100 in the New Zealand and South British Insurance Offices. , ; The barque Comet, which left Dunedin for Hobart Town m February last, and has not be,en heard of since, was insured in the Standard Company, Auckland branch, for Grahamstown, June 25th. Ihe Tararu Gold Mining Company has resumed work.. The reef shows some very rich stone, with quantities of gold in the mullock. .' m, „ ~New Plymouth, June 25th. A resolution was passed m favour of waiting to see what measures the Government would bring down before deciding to express an opinion that it is desirable to abolish the Provinces.
