SPECIAL TELEGRAM. (FROM OCR OWN CORRESrONDENT.) Auckland, June 24th. Sir George Grey is at the Thames on offi cial business. He has held interviews with miuing men in reference to the necessary alterations in the Mining District Act which Sir George promised to introduce next session to obviate the locking up of a new goldfield by large leases, as done at Tairna. The proceedings lasted over three hours, and the recommendations were principally as follows :—That rent shall be payable quarterly instead of annually ; tint ail new gronnd to be taken up shall not exceed tive acres, with power of ultimate amalgamation to extend to thirty acres, or by taking in abandoned I ground to the san,e extent. An amalgama- : tion of five claims after the expiration of six months, and an amalgamation to the extent of thirty acres after the expiration of twelve mouths, from the date of taking up the claim. The claim must be worked, whatever its extent, by not less than one man to each two men's ground. His Honour expressed his readiness to receive any further suggestions from those willing to assist him in the preparation of the Amendment Bill.
