Duuxkkxxess. — William Johnston was fined 10s, in default, 48 hours' imprisonment. 11.1.r.c.M.i.Y ox PiiEMisEs. —Henry Helyshaw was charged, on remand, with being illegally on thi! premises of Henry Barnes, bailiff, on the morning of the 22nd. Mr Stamper, jun., defended, and while admitting that accused was on the premises, stated that he was there without any felonious intent, Accused was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment. A.ss.vur.T. —James Kirse was fined 20s, and costs, for assaulting James P. Simon. Housk ok li.l-famk.—Flora Carter was charged with being the occupier of a brothel in Clark street. —Sergeant Major Bevan said the house of accused was frequented by prostitutes and persons of bad character. A robbery was also reported to have taken place there on Sunday morning. ■—Sergeant O'Neill said accused resided with a woman named Sydney Liz. The house was a resort for notorious characters.-— Mr E. Cook defended, and after replying to the charge mentioned that accused was prepared to leave the place.—The Bench considered prisoner guilty, but as she was leaving the Province the case would be dismissed.— Charlotte Frederick, a gaily-dressed woman, was charged with a similar offence. She appeared before their Worships in a helpless state of intoxication, and was, at the request of Inspector Mallard, removed to the Lock-up. Donald, a farm servant in the employ of last witness, stated that on Saturday morning last be was riding- along the road near Mosgiel, leading a grey mare. Prisoner suddenly appeared at the side of the road, making the'mare shy, and he then walked ahead a bit. Accused then turned vound, and catching hold of the bridle of tht; horse witness was riding, he said : " If you don't go on and give me that beast I will kill you." They remained wrangling with each other about a quarter of an hour, when prisoner seized witness by the leg, threw him over, mounted the horse, and roue away. Witness mounted the other aiiiniiil and returned to his master.—Prisoner, when asked if he had any questions to put, replied that he knew nothing about the mutter. — Patrick Meare, hostler at the Shamrock stables, said prisoner brought a horse to the stables on Saturday afternoon. He said he had come a long journey, and told witness to give it plenty to eat and take great care of it. Witness remarked that the animal was a very fine one, and jocularly asked whether accused would sell it, to which he replied that he would not part with it for anything. — Sergeant Anderson apprehended prisoner on Sunday afternoon, iv Stafford street.—The Bench remarked that prisoner was probably moi c fit for a Lunatic Asylum than anywhere else, and reserved judgment until he had been examined.
