Wellington, June 22nd. A locomotive made here, at Mill's foundry, was tested to-day. It was a complete success. It is intended for the Manawatu and Foxton Railway. Napier, June 22nd. A man named Birnfield, employed rafting timber for Mr Money, is supposed to have been drowned in crossing the Patina River, on Saturday. He was about 22 years of age, and a native of Bristol. He has friends at the Thames. The river is rapidly subsiding. The Council met this afternoon. The Superintendent made a financial statement. There is increase on all items of ordinary revenue, but a decrease on territorial receipts. Under the head Ordinary and Miscellaneous, £56,527 in place of £41,2G9, as estimated. June, is £02,534. The population is increasing, and revenue falliug off. The Revenue from all Sources is £42,160, as against £55,419 last year. The Estimated Expenditure for providing for ordinary services of the Provincial (Government, including Gaol, Hospital, Police, Harbour, Surveys Lighthouse, &c, is £12,337. The Proposed Expenditure for Public Works is £20,005. Council adjourned until next (this) day. Some books and pictures recently imported here have been seized by the Customs authorities as indecent. Tne importers will be prosecuted at the Police Court, and one of them is said to be the agent for the sale of books issued by the Society for Piomoting Christian Knowledge. Blenheim, June 22nd. The hull was knocked down at £(j/5, but the purchaser failed to make the necessary deposit, and Mr Walton was in treaty yesterday evening to sell the hull at £o"50 to auother person.
