COUNCILLORS' ROBES.

A late number of the Pall Mall Gazette says that at the last meeting of the Kingston Town Council an interesting discussion took place on a proposal that in future the members of the council should appear in robes. It was suggested that the councillors shoukl wear black robes, the aldermen purple, and the mayor scarlet. The suggestion, however, did not meet with universal approval. One member told a painful story of what occurred at i'oole, when an election petition was about to be tried, snd the council, "who did not! often see a judge," rtsolved to wear robes. They obtained them iv four days, aud, arrayed in these goodly garments, met the judge at the railway station. "HisLordshij) just bowed to the mayor, aud away he drove." The Corporation were so disgusted with the whole proceeding that they iudiguantly took off their robes, and liave never since put them on again. After the recital of this occurrence it is not surprising that there was a difference of opinion among the Kingston town councillors as to the prudence of incurring the cost of robes, wdiich, too Lite, might be found to attract little or no admiration. Oa. a division ten voted for the robes and ten against them, and as the mayor dtc'iucd to give a casting vote the proposal fell to the ground. Perhaps, on the whole, the council decided wisely, for, as one of the opponents of the suggestion pointed out, an awful risk is run by corporate bodies who purchase official robes, owing to the difficulty of fitting them to new councillors as vacancies arise. Long councillors fiud themselves with short robes and short councillors with long ones. This necessitates additions or curtailments destructive ef the symmetry of tbe garments, and leads to much inconvenience and vexation of spirit.
