THE SALMON OVA PER TIMARU.
The..following letter Las been handed to us for publication:—
" To Jims An.n, Esq., W.S., Edinburgh. "Dear Sir—lt has been a source of much regret to us that the passengers by the Tiniarn were so far short of the guaranteed number— increasing thereby, for the Provincial Government, indirectly the cost of sending out the sahnon ova ; at the same time, it has been no benefit to the ship, but the reverse, as the space being; unoccupied and the provisions ,put; on board for ,i much larger number of passengers than actually went, the half passage-money on the munber short leaves us a less benefit than if the guaranteed munber had. been shipped. And as it happened the anticipating of the date of depai-ture of this ship from the date originally fixed for her sailing, in order to despatch the ova at the earliest possible moment after it was secured, dej rived us of a much larger quantity of cargo than we had calculated upon losing ; so that it would have been lmtch more to the benefit of the ship had you seen your way to accept of an offer to take the ova to Port Chalmers direct, freight free. However, as the matter is a public one, and as the relations between the Albion Shipping Company and the Provincial Government of Otago have always been of an agreeable and friendly character, our Mr Galbraith suggested to his codirectors that some aid being given by that Company towards the expense of the endeavour now made to propagate salmon in New Zealand would be appreciated by his Honour the Superintendent and the Provincial Council of Otago, we are instructed to intimate to you that the Directors of the Albion Shipping Company have voted the sum of £300 for this purpose.—We are, &c, "P. Henderson and Co. '" la. St Vincent Place, " Glasgow, 20th January, 1875."
