During the month of October an exceptionally large group of spots was iv England visible on the surface of the sun. According to Mr W. F. Denning, of Bristol, the spots covered an area of nearly 78,000 miles. The Belgian journals mention the' death at the age of 10 years and 11 months, of Frederic van da Kerkhove, a joung painter of almost miraculous precocity. He was a native of Bruges, and had executed not less than 350 pictures. The proposal to convert the tomb of Augustus, at Rome, into a modem theatre, is said to be likely soon to be carried out! The Archaeological Commission declares that the place is of no importance, and possesses no mo: c. than the name of the ancient monument.

The reward of extraordinary virtue ib thus picturesquely narrated in an American journal :—"There is a man up in our country who always pays for his newspapers in advance. A wag walked into a saloon in New York lately, where three men were sitting round i\ hroless stove. As ho entered all eyes were turned toward him. Apparently taking a mental interview of the number of people in the room, the newcomer stepped up to the bar and blandly ordered four classes of beer. The boots that had adorned the top of the stove now sought the floor, three men oloared tlu ir mouths of tobacco, and all looked at the barkeeper as he filled tho glasses and placed them m a yoyf on the bar. When everything was ready the three loungers rose and the stranger pai.l for the beer. Then, starting with the glass farthest from the door he emptied all that tho barkeeper had filed and quickly left the saloon. Then tliree chairs were resumed.—Danbury News.
