TELEGRAMS.
Wellington, January 13th. The Wellington College has been made the New Zealand local centre for matriculation examinatipn for the Cambridge University. An attempt is being made to arrange for men who have matriculated being eligible for the Civil Service without further examination. At a meeting of the Anniversary Regatta Committee last night, it was announced that over £100 had been received, and promises of more money been made. The chief race will be that by yachts for Shaw-SavilFs cup, in addition to the sum of £7 for the winners, and £5 for the second boat. The other first prizes range from £15 to £5, and tLe second from £5 to £1. In the event of boats entering from other parts of the colony, the value of the prizes will be increased. At the half-yearly meeting of the New Zealand Insurance Company, held to-day, a dividend was declared.of twenty per cent., amounting to £10,000. The premiums were upwards of £11,000 in excess of the corresponding half-year of 1873. The Directors' report stated that, although the proposal to sell shares did not-meet with the response anticipated, the. shareholders had availed themselves of the opportunity, and taken up the balance of the unallotted shares, which were now more widely distributed, the Company now consisting of nearly three hundred members. The total premiums for the half-year were £55,545, and the losses £41,177. Messrs James Williamson and G. B. Owen were re-elected directors.
Hokitika, January 13th. The s s. Tararua arrived from Melbourne this afternoon. She left on the 7th inst. The Tarorua brings the following passengers to Dunedin: — Messrs McCarthy, Thibon, Howe, Fergie. Hood, Monohan, Firebrace, Master Dartlett, and 3 in the steerage. She has 5 tons of cargo for Dunedin, and 261 tons for all ports.
