THE CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

The Caledonian Society may be congratulated upon the successof their sports arranged for the benefit of the Benevolent Institution. About 3000 persons were present at the Northern Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoon, the weather being beautifully fine. The Artillery Band kindly gave their services for the occasion. Many commented upon the absence of the bagpipes, but the performers of the Ist and 2nd instant had proceeded to their respective homes in the country districts. The booths and merry-go-round were fairly patronised. The events were as follows:— Handicap Rack. 220 yards. Heate. Prizes- £3 £9 £1. ' "'

There were 24 entries for this race. The first heat was won by T. Murphy (26£ sec.) and Henderson ; second, C. Bennet (27sec.) and Burke ; third, Donaldson (26isec.) and Brooks. The final heat produced a really splendid contest, Beanet winning easily, Murphy second, Brooks and Burke (dead heat} third. Time, 25|sec. Handicap Eaa axd Ladle Race, for boys. Heats. This race was looked forward to as the must interesting of the day, the admirers of M'Gregor thinking that he would make the pace fearfully warm for Jaeobsen. There were six entries. J. Campbell received 42 yards, and A. Smith 80 yards. A. Drake (/0 yards) did not put in an appearance. The competitors started off at a: hot pace, which was gradually increased. In the third lap, Jacobsen passed M'Gregor, who however, put on a vigorous spurt and headed both Jacobsen and Campbell. The trio, then kept well together, Stuart still maintaining the lead. In the fourth lap, Jacobsen, who was walking in magnificent style, passed Campbell and M'Gregor, and in the fifth lap [he caught Stuart. Upon entering the sixth | lap Jaeobsen was six yards ahead of Stuart, I with Macgregor four yards behind, and Campbell and Smith bringing up: the rear. Jacobsen was gradually increasing Ms lead - when Macgregor threw off;his. hafc and put on a good spurc in the eighth lap, but the call availed him nothing. Macgregor requires more of that elasticity- of movement which Edwards possessed before he can cope successfully with men like Jacobsen. Jacobsen won the event as he liked, going like an engine. At the finish he was about 40 yards ahead of Macgregor, who was closely fol lowed by Stuart. Campbell and Smith were out of the race altogether after the sixth lap. Wrestling. Prizes. £3, £I,los. Warn refused to run in the final heat because the Judges allowed Burke and Bennett (who ran level for second place in one of the first heats with Wain), to enter for the final heat without contesting their right in the customary manner, it having been arranged that only two competitors in each event should have the privilege of- contesting the final heat. ° - ■■■•"■•■ Oxb Huxdrkd Yards Race. £1 a side. Gymxastics axd Dascixg. Professor Long and several of his pupils performed some difficult and interesting feats on the horizontal bar, and were enthusiast! -I cally applauded. The Professor and Mr W. Mills also engaged ia fencing. Several amateurs danced to music supplied by the Artillery Band. The whole of the prize dancers at the recent annual gathering promised to give their services on Saturday, but Mr Buchanan was the only one who made good his appointment. Messrs Hannigan and Dickson, under the circumstances, kindly volunteered to supply the omissions. Only £82 were collected on Saturday. We I understand that if the Corporation would give the Caledonian Society power to enforce reasonable charges for sports in aid of charitable institutions, they would arrange them more frequently. On Saturday numbers had the privilege of enjoying the games without contributing a fraction. The sports were terminated at 7.15 p.m.
