BLUESKIN AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SHOW.

SEVENTH ANNUAL SHOW.

(BY OVR SPECIAL EEPOETER.)

f President, John Duncan, Esq.; Vice-Presi-dent, James Green, Esq., M.P.C.; Committee of Management, Messrs P. C. Neill, P. Wilson G Chailton, A. G. Watson. B. Smith, John Colehan, I). Dunliar, I. Green, R. Hislop, A, Wilson, .T. Reid, J. Downes, J. Sonneas, J Harvey W. Park, Thos. Quayle, T. Brown, W. Evans' C. M'Dorald, and .Tnsnes Wright; Treasure!-) Mr X. B. Fe^uson j Secretary, Mr Win. Fullar. The seventh annual show of the Blueskin and j Kilmog Agricultural and Pastoral Society took place on the Government Recreation Reserve yesterday. The attendance in the morning was limited, owing, no doubt, i» the threatening state of the weather, which was—to use a Sam Slickism- of a juicy native, for all the world as if our ftnpieni friend tho clerk of the clouds held a gigantic spongo 3a his grasp, and now and then by slight showers favoured the company assembled, much against their will, with coolers lowards the afternoon, however, 5, change, had come over the spirit of. tys action, and the grounds were we^l attended, visitors from a distance, and others interested in Btoek the conpovase cf the morniug having been sup- : plemented by the natives later on, and alto- | gether 500 persons, were present. !In sho,rt horns the exhibits were mainly on one side, no ouo seemingly thinking it worth his while i-o compete with Mr John Duncan of Cherry Farm. This, we consider, a mistake' for however good his stock, improvement cannot be expected without friendly competition. In Ayrshirea i\\6 exhibits were more numerous that class of animals being a more favourite one than short-horns, owing to the quantity of milk they give, and a larger quantity of dairy produce as a result, articles looked at more particularly by settlers ; and we were pleased xa see prizes coming to liiueskin proper as a vesu,ls. in provincial breds tho exhibits were very numerous, and competition,' as'it baa been in the class named prior to. that, close; so much so indeed, that the judges, h:«5 great difficulty in deciding upon the respective merits of the aunna.ls. Mr Duncan's magnificent bull Waterhouse (naniod after the hon. gentleman who was recently Premier of New Zealand) was bred, by the .Hon. Mathew Holmes, and attracted a considerable amount of atteotion. The heifer Marchioness,, purchased by Mr Bv.noan at Mr Bell's lecent tale, was also, exhibited. The cream ojf the show maybe given to the horses, the entries being numerous in all classes, , and in our opinion of a better stamp than any j exhibited before in this district. To ehum.erate the merits of the. chief prizetakers would be supeifluous. as they are so well known to their admire-3.in th 3 diffeie.ntdistricts, suffice it to say that we could not wish t see % better exhibit in those classes 1 f draught thvou^hbredsj aiid. h ?l ck,s. the award*

of the judges, in placing Mr Oman's Lady of tlid Lake second to Mr J. Green's mare was looked upon by roany (including the prize-taker) as an excellent joke. . _ Sheep and swine were pooily represented, but those exhibited reflected considerable credit upon the Blueskin district. - l In dairy produce, althou S a there were 38 entries m the three departments of powdered fresh, and salt butter, we expected to have seen more; and if the good housewives of the distric* *? ew , tLUch tue members of Committee exert themselves m procuring special prizes, and what a warm side those giving them have to the better halves of settlers, as being the producers of such delicious articles as compose, dairy produce (most of which prizes do not appear on tho programme, as they are granted after its publication), they would, we are certain, come forward rcore nobly and support that department better, -in this respect we anticipate more exhibits next year. The judges in various departments expressed themselves as well pleased, and the Showioay ba pronounced a succe33. — Mr John Colehan, of the Waitati Hotel presided over the only booth on the show grounds • and we also noticed a small fruit stall. They were fairly patronised. . y Though the Police were well represented at the show, no demand was made for their sorvices. The contest for the special prize for the hest leaping hack caused much excitement and discusTw 1 Waf, generally thought that Mr Marshall s fine black horse Te Kooti would secure fa?
