The steamer Comerang returned to port yesterday morning, after a lengthy absence extending to a fortnight Trading between InvercargiU and Riverton has kept her south so long. She left here on the 23rd ult. at 3 a.m., arrived at the Bluff at 10 p.in same day, and went on to Invercargill ali'.tle later, arriving at daylight next m jrning. She then made a couple of taps to Rivertpn, Uking a party of excursionists from Riverton to Tnvercargill on New Year's Day and returned to Riverton on 2nd'inst. Lay there until the 6th, then went back to the Bluff; filled up car<*o there, and left at 11 a.m. on the 6th, and arrived at the Port at 8.50 a.m. yesterday. She brought a few passengers and a cargo of grain, and after coalinsr at the: -Henbury, proceeded to Dunedin. We observe that she is to sail south again to-morrow. The ketch Jessie, loaded with grain, arrived from Waikouaiti yesterday morning. She took the ground on the bank off Grassy Point, but floated as the tide made, and went on to Bunedin.

The Harbour Company's steamer Samson which arrived at the Port at midnight from Oamaru, brought the following passengers:—Jlr and Mrs M'Pherson, Mesdames M'Gregor, Spence, Miss Lane, Messrs Smith (2), Lemon, Walker, Cormick, Allen, Baker, Sinclair Hugh, and 7 steerage. She also brought a quantity of wool, 240 bales for the Waikato and 12 for the Calypso These were transhipped yesterday morning, and then the Samson proceeded to Dunedin. She leaves as usual for Oamaru this morning. The Harbour Company's steamer Beautiful Star arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday at 9.50 a.m from axound trip to Lyttelton and Timaru. She left here on the 29th ult., at 5 p.m., called: at Timaru next day and then pushed on for Lyttelton, reaching there half an hour after noon on the 31st. Lay at Lyttelton until the 4th hist, then left at 6 p.m., with 40 immigrants from the ship Crusader, to be landed at Timaru weather close and threatening, wind N.W. After she had cleared the Heads the wind hauled to west and then suddenly to S.E., and freshened to a furious gale that raised a high sea. This sudden change compelled the Star to find a lee, and she was accordingly headed for Le: Bori Bay, and anchored there at midnight The gale proved short-lived,- moderating towards daylight, and at 7 a.ni. on the sth the Star put to sea; had light easterly weather up, and arrived at Timaru « 10.30 pm. same day. Lauded immigrants at daylight next ■•morning, the 6th; shipped wool, and left lor head-quarters at 7.40 p.m., arriving here as above She transhipped 154 bales to.the Invercargill, and 96 to the Calypso, and then proceeded to Dunedin. Fine easterly weather favoured her from Timaru. We ob*erv%that she is to leave on the same round again toMessrs^H. Houghton and Co.'s steamer Express, Captain Christian, returned, from her second trip to the Bluff at 10.30 a m. yesterday, and after waiting an tour or two for tide, during which time she coaled at the barque P.C.E., she went on to Dunedin. The Express has made a good trip, leaving Port as she did at 1 p.m. on Sunday last; and arrived at the Bluff at 8 p.m. on Monday, her course up the coast having been impeded by heavy south-west weather and sea. Discharged and loaded, and left at 5.35 p.m. on Wednes'day.^afld: arrived as above.' Light N.E. weather marked the run back. The Express brought a full cargo of timber, :and is advertised to leave for the South again, to-morrow. , ' ■- ■■

The 3*ew Zealand Steam Shipping Company's s.s. Phoebe, Captain Worsp, arrived at the Port Chalmers Railway Pier at^ p.m. yesterday. She left the ManuSau at 3.15 p.m on the Ist instant, arrived at Taranaki at 1 p.m. next day, left half-an-hourafter, and reached Nelson at 5 a.m. on the 3rd,~Left again at4.lsp.m on the 4th, reached Picton at 1 a.m. on the sth leftacain at 1.45 a.m., and arrived at Wellington at 8 30 sun Continued her way south at 6 p.m. on the sth, arrived at Lyttelton at 2.30 p.m. on the 6th ; remained there but four hours and pushed on to this Port, arriving as above. The run from the Manukau opened witti a strong N.E. gale and thick, rainy weather to Taranaki the remainder of the passage, being marked by li"ht' easterly winds and moderately fine weather. We have to thank Mr Bartor, the purser, for our Northern exchanges and, this.report. The Phoebe brought 50 passengers and a few tons of cartro. She makes but a short stay this time, b ing advertised to leave to-mor-row on her return North. . . .

The sometime-expected barque Speedwell put in an appearance yesterday afternoon, after being 24 days from Kaipara. She is evidently not a clipper, and, moreover, according to the master's statement, encountered a great deal of adverse weather from the time she left Kaipara on the 14th December to arrival. Westerly and southerly winds predominated on the West Coast, and on the ninth day out she found herself through Cook Strait, but then meeting with a heavy S.E. gale was blown back again, and made for Blind Bay. Dodged about the Bay waiting for a change of wind until the 27th, and then ran through the Strait with a K.W. wind, and fetched abreast of Banks Peninsula by the 29th. Since then she has been detained

by light variable weather and one or two heavy southerly blows, the last of which assailed her on Tuesday, and was attended by a very low glass, 28.80 being the barometric reading. She sailed in with a fresh N.K. wind, and anchored off Grassy, and is to discharge her cargo at the Railway Pier. It consists of kauri timber consigned to Neill and Co. The Fierj Cross," a smart top-ail schooner of 72 tons,., came into port yesterday, and being; favoured with a;; fair wind, went on to Dunedin, andTJerthed alongside the schooner George Noble.' ; She isSfrdia.-Moeraki, which place she left yesterday morning at # o'clock, and brought to that port a cargo of Stimber from Tairua, Auckland." Captain Smith renorts^thatthe. barquentine Falcon was still"at Moeraki, hut.having;: nearly all her cargo of stone on'board,'was expected j: to sail for Melbourne to-day.' . i f :' ■ ; : Last evening a ship was signalled at the Heads, and' the Geelong went down for her', j At the; time the last train left the ship was off the Heads in tow of the tug,, and had American colours flying. She is presumed to be the Wildwood, from Puget Sound, with a cargo of; •Oregon sleepers."', v-r_;-' " ■^.•iiS-'"
