MOSGIEL.

The Gathering here, which was the fifth annual one of the Taieri Caledonian Society, took place on New Year's Day, and was a great success. This was greatly due to the activity of the Directors, who seemed determined that nothing should be wanting on their parts to please those who had come from far and nsar- to witness the sports. The Recitation for a suit of Mosgiel Tweed although open to all the Taieri schools, brought out only threo boys, and we were glad to see a clergyman, the Rev. Mr Sutherland, actin" as one of. the judges, and also from morning to night moving amongst his flock and takin- an interest in all that was going on. And lam sure this circumstance was greatly due to the entire absence of drunkenness on any part of the ground. The attendance was large, but the competitors were not numerous, and in consequeuce several events could not be brought off. lhe Mosgiel Brass Band, under the able leader, ship of Mr M'Donald, discoursed good music during the day. The weather'was fine, the people were in »ood spirits, and there was nothing in the shape of rowdyism to mar the general enjoyment. There were no police on the ground. We have to thank the Secretary and Treasurer for the above information, as well as for the copy of the prize list, which we give below. The Society are fortunate in haviug good ofP.ce-hearers and we can only say tliat the energy displayed by thoso gentlemen on Friday was most commendable.
