•The Chinese are erecting their first telegraph line. ' Much attention is given to the threatened war between China and Japan in Formosa. The authorities at Macao have seized a junk implicated in the cutting of the Australian cable. Seventeen persons were taken prisoners. The master and his wife were found guilty of" larceny; and sentenced, to 15 years' imprisonment. . • . . . _ i

A terrible tragedy, occurred on the' eveningl of the 23rd August on board the steamer Spark,'whilst on h-.r voyage trom Canton to Macao. ■ Pirates attacked the crew and passengers near Bogen. They murdered the captain, mate and. purser,, and dangerously wounded the only Europavj passenger, and most of the crew.
