Messrs M'Meckan and Blackwood's R.M.S.S. Albion, Captain Underwood, arrived at the Port Chalmers Railway Pier at 7.30 a.m. yesterday. She brings 41 passengers and the New Zealand portion of tlio .European mail via Suez, comprising in all 82 bags and 13 packets,- of which 22 bags were for Otago. She had also 174 tons of general cargo and two valuable rams. We have to thank Mr Morris, the purser, for our Melbourne exchanges and the report of the trip from Melbourne, which was as under :—The Albion left Hobeon's Bay at 4 p.m. on the 21st inst., cleared the Heads at 6.45 p.m., and passed Swan Island at 3 p.m. next day. She experienced moderate easterly weather until the 23rd, when a very heavy N.E. gale came on, and raised a high and confused sea. The gale held until the evening of the 24th, then moderated, and was succeeded by variable winds and moderate weather for the remainder of the pissage. The Albion passed the Solander at 4 30 a.m. on the 2Gth and arrived at the Bluff at 10.30 am. the same day, thus having made the run across in four days 10 hours. Lauded passengers, mails, and cargo, and left at 0.30 p.m., and arrived here as above. Calm weather, with a heavy easterty sea, prevailed along the coast. Tho Albion is to leave this afternoon for Melbourne, via Coast ports and Cook Strait. The singularly low range—from 25.70 to 20.00—0f the barometer during the last day or two has been the Bubject of comment amongst our nautical friends of Port Chalmers. It was deemed by all to surely presage heavy weather, and preparations in accordance were made ; but after all the weather did not come, and now the barometer's low range is accounted for by the news we have received of a very heavy easterly gale at L.vttelton on Wednesday. It wa< a local blow like that one which Hew here on Monday aud Tuesday mornings, but was unlike in other respects, ii.asjnuch that it did a good deal of damage to the Lyttelton Harbour Works, whilst every ship in port is said to have driven.

The ship Cartsburn hauled away from the pier yesterday, and was towed by the Geelong to the lower anchorage, where she brought up to be ready to put to sea when her defoliation has been decided upon. The ship Caroline is at last rid of her cargo. The few remaining bars of iron were transhipped yesterday to the schooner Taurunga. The steamer Geelong towed the schooner Elderslie to Dunedin yesterday. The Elderslie had discharged enough cargo to reduce her draught to meet the requirements of the Upper Harbour. The greater part of her freight is still on board.

The steamer Lady Bird sailed for the North yesterday afternoon with 34 passengers and GO tons of cargo. The schooner Hally Hayley was relieved of the last of her cargo yesterday. She will be ballasted to-day, and probably s.iil for Hobart Town this evening. ■ The wind failing her, the ketch Eliza M'Phee did not clear the harbour on Wednesday evening, but brought up in Deborah Bay, below the shipping. She will get away the first slant.

Ihe barque Harriet Armitage was towed down from Dunedin yesterday afternoon, and came to an anchor below the shipping. She will sail to-day, weather permitting.

The ketch Isabella came down from Dunedin yesterday afternoon, and went right out on her way to t_atlin's River.

The cutter Jane came down the hirbour yesterday, and anchored oft the Port. She will sail for Shag Point first slant.

Wo cull the following from the Melbourne papers :— The Argus reports the arrival of a new steam tug, of 60 horse-power, named the Rescue. She is described as a handsome iron vessel, quite new, and likely to prove a decided acquisition to the local fleet. Her dimensions are—length, 112 feet; beam, 19 feet: and depth of hold, 10 feet. On her trial trip she steamed 121 knots per hour against a head-wind. The engines are disconnecting1, and on the surface condensing principle. The Rescue made the passage from Shields to Melbourne under cam as, and brought out a cargo of bricks. She was 136 days on the way, leaving Shields on April 4th, and arriving at Melbourne August 18th. —The steamer Claud Hamilton is running in the Melbourne and Adelaide trade —The Argus, remarks upon the prevalence of westerly winds on the Australian coast, and how they had brought up many home ships. Four arrived on cue day—the 19th inst. The ships report heavy westerly weather whilst they were rauninodown their easting.—A large iron ship, with her maii° topmast gone, was sighted off Cape Otway on the 20th inst.

The arrival of the Atjeh, the first own vessel of the Netherlands India. Steam Navigation Company to take up the running- to Adelaide and <-o on round the Australian coast, is announced by the South Australian Begister of the 17th hist. The Atjeh is described as a handsome vessel, 300 feet lon^-, of good lines, and fitted with compound engines of ISO-horse power nominal. She steams ten knots upon a consumption of 13* tons of coal per diem.
