Wellington, July 3rd. : At the opening of Parliament thirteen members assembled in the Legislative Council, and thirfcy-five in the House of Representatives. Notices of motion regarding the usual sessional Committees were made. Messrs Gibbs and Montgomery took the oath and their seats. The Premier laid a batch of papers on the table, chiefly regarding Immigration, including copies of the Handbook of New Zealand. A Bill to abolish imprisonment for debt was introduced by the Premier, and read a first time. The Premier explained that the reason of Mr M'Lean's absence was that he left Wellington under the impression that the House would not meet before the 16th July; but he was expected back this week. A number of notices of motion were made, and the House adjourned till Tuesday. AToox containing money' and ship's papers, belonging to H.M.S. Challenger, has been stolen. The box was picked up at Pipitia, and the papers were safe, but the money was all gone. The thief is undiscovered. Auckland, July 3rd. John Pascoe and James Dobbins have been arrested for murdering William Wright Carter in a Maori brothel. They knocked him down, kicked him, breaking his arm in two places, and inflicting other injuries, which resulted fatally. In the Police Court, the charge of incen- | diarism against Alexander Brown has closed, after many days' hearing. The prisoner was committed for trial. The Local Committee of the Colonial Rank of New Zealand are holding meeting-! in various parts of the country districts, and are receiving good support. A large number of shares are applied for. Mr Alexander Sauuders reports : —Sales— Thames Gas Co., £1 14s 6d ; Crovn Priace, £1 33 6d; City of York. Us. Buyers: South British Insurance Co., £2 8s ; Fiji Bank, £2 15s: Moanataiari, £1 15s; Inverness, 3s : City of York, 11s Christchurch, July 3rd. The New Zealand Shipping Company has received telegraphic advices from London announcing the arrival of the following ships : —Duke of Edinburgh aad Star of India, from Lyttelton; DunfiUan, from Otago. Also, the departure from London of the. Carisbrook Castle, Columbus, Strathnaver, Loch Ewen, and Tweed. The vessels being loaded by the Company at the end of June were: Eurynome, Canterbury, Cartevale, Wellington, Lennox Castle, Otago, and Stanley Castle. Lyttelton, July 3rd. The ship Dunedin, from London, with immigrants, is at the Heads. No-particulars have been received as yet. ' Oamartt, July 3rd. The contractors of the Waiareka Railway entertained about,4o of the principal mer chants and settlers to dinner, in the Masonic MalL The Mayor, Dr Wait, was chairman, and the Hon. H. J. Miller, and J. M'Lean, Esq., Vice-chairmen. Several congratulatory speeches were made, and the affair passed off successfully.
