The enquiry into tho mortality of the children on board tho ship Bebingtcn, during her passage from London to thiai port, is finished. The mortality is declared to have boen consequent upon the bad quality and insufficiency of the food, and insufficient ventilation.
Auckxanh, November 20th. Th<» Cagli-Lystcr Opera Company opened their season last night to a welliilled house.
Mr Alfred Saunders reports that OaJtedouian shares are quoted at £15 !0h» Alburnui do at £4 os, Cure do at £1 11s, and Smith British Insurance do at £1 1&*.
Rekfton, November 20th.
A fire broke out at 3.52 p.m. The telegraph office being in danger, the operator removed the instruments. The fire, however, was got under without the ofiice being much damaged. home fencing was destroyed.
Guf.ymojth, November 20th. (JOToz. of gold have been brought down by the Ajax Company, Inangalma. The Directors of the Company have declared % dividend absorbing £2500.
Chhistchmini, November 20th. A New Zealand Shipping Company, Limited, was iloated to-day. I ls capital is £100.000 in £10 (shares. The first issue of 5000 shares will be allotted in Canterbury, nnd 3300 are already subscribed for. The second lot of 5000 shares will be reserved for the other Provinces. The promoters of the Company are the New* Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, and Messrs Gould, Rhodes, M'Lean, Studholmc, Montgomery, Buckley, Birch, Andernon, Coster, Williams, Wilson, Sawtell, Iteevea, Turner, and Peacock. A meeting is to be held on Monday next to urge upon the Provincial (Government to buy the Cathedral site for publio offices. The price- asked for it is £12,000.
Lytteltox, November 20th. A man named Kelson Bull committed suicide last night by nearly cutting his head oft. An inquest will bo held tomorrow.
Invbiu:auoill, November 20th. At the Supreme Court, Morrison was found guilty of manslaughter. Sentence was deferred. Mr 3 Whif.ting was tried for the murder of her threo children. The facts were clearly proved, and the defence was a plea of insanity. She was found guilty and sentenced to deatli.
Bi.uff, November 20th. The s.s. Rangitoto, Captain Mao.kie, a-rived here at 0.30 this evening. She left Melbourne at 0 p.m. on tho 14th mat., and encountered a heavy S.S.W. gale, with terrific sea, which lasted till the morning of the 18th. She sails for Dunedin at 4 p.m. to-morrow.
