LIBRARY OF REFERENCE.

A meeting of the Sub-Committee appointed to confer with tho University authorities rolative to the establishment of a Library of Reference in connection with the Otago University, wan held in tho Provincial Council Chambers on tho 28th ult. There were present—His Honour the .Superintendent, Lieut.-Col. Cargill, Rev. t)r Stuart, Professors Shand and Macgregor, and Mr George 8011. Tho minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. Mr J. Cargill was appointed Hon. Treasurer during tho absence of Mr E. B. Cargill. Ilia Honour the Superintendent handed over to the Treasurer a cheque for £100, which he had recoivod as a subscription to the funds of. the Library from the Hon. Robert Campbell. At the request of the Committee, Professors Shand and Macgrogor cordially consented to collect subscriptions. It was resolved, on the motion of His Honour tho Superintendent, that tho Hon. Treasurer be requested to advertise for subscriptions and also to publish the list of subscribers. The Acting Hon. Treasurer intimated that he had received a letter enclosing invoice and bill of lading of books, furnished by Messrs Bell and Bradfute, of Edinburgh, in compliance with the order sent home by the Hon. Treasurer some months ago, amounting to £233 Ills lid, and forwarded by tho ship Helen Burns, which sailed from Glasgow on the Itjth August. A report from the Committee appointed to draw up rules and regulations, was road, and ordered to lie on the table

It was further resolved, on tho motion of His Honour tho Superintendent, "That the Professors bo respectfully requested to prepare a further list of books, not exceeding the value of £'750 ; nuch list to bo submitted to a special meeting of the Library Committee, prior to being sent home by the next two or three mails."
