DUNEDIN AND PORT CHALMERS RAILWAY.
Steam was got up yesterday for tho first 'tuup'on the Josephine, one of .the locomotives lately imported 'for th<?" .port Chalmers Railway. It had been erected in a shed; on the, pier ,by Mr Amos, engineer, who accompanied the plant out in the ship Wave Queen. During the last few days tlie promoters of the line — Messrs Proudfoot, Oliver, and Ulpb—have been .assiduous/in their efforts to connect the inner end of the pier with the reclaimed land on shore. It was.not .until five o'clock yesterday afternoon tliat the rails from the tunnel to the pier wcra'adjustedj .when the signal was made to start. When the engine, arrived close to tho tunnel, it was stopped, and about 30 gentlemen out of the crowd in attendance, by permission found ..places on ifc, and proceeded through the tunnel amidst the cheers of the.bysfcanders. On , emerging from the tunnel afc tlie Mussel j Bay ond/1 fche. cheers- /of - < tho- popu- | laco from "the houses and along tlje ; banks again greeted ' tho Josephine, j arid-'were resi>onded tv by those on board j •her. ' She sped along afc good speed as far ; ■as.Sawyer's; Bay, going smoothly-round I some sharp curves, whore tub break'wis pmt on. Considering that tlu* line i 3 nofc yet properly finished, * this firafc attempt with a weight of over 25' tons was quite a success. A slight halt was made at Sawyer's Bay,* and tlie return- journey to tha Port was then made at a mOre rapid rato, tlie iron horso whistling, as it; came' along. All returned saliaiied with their "ride,' notwithstanding that a'.feW were a little besmeared- with soot and'&tbam. The rapidity with whicli the engine was eased or stopped was'a subject of remark, aa also was. tbe quickness with whicli.it could be started again. Tlie other locomotive .-(the Rose),. which lias. al3o;bc6n put up-on tlio pier, is expected-to < get up sfceam to-day. ~The.first whistle of the Josephine was heard afc half-past ,tbn in theiprenoon, iatimatiug that she intcaded io start. .Great praise is UuctoMrGaorgo" Prondfoot' for the m-which:lie, with a 'gang of nieiiii'leveHod* the grbiihd and laid sleepers, rails, ifca-* from the trtnuel to tlie pier.
