THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

Tuesday,-■ September 10m

Mr Stafford announced that ho had formed a Ministry, consisting or himself and Messrs Fitzherbert, Gillies, Curtis, Reid, and Sewell. It was probable, however, that at least one other member would yet bo added. It was intended also to add one, if not two, Maori.members to the Executive, to advise them on Nativo matters, but the gteatost care and deliberation would be exorcised in selecting those Native members. As Ministers had only j been sworn in a few hours, he woidd ask the House to adjourn to Friday, to enable them todecidewiiatbusiiio3s should be proceeded with, and wlKtt should be allowed to stand over. Mr Gillies would bo Colonial Treasurer, and Mr-Reid Minister of Public Works. The other portfolios had not yet been allotted. Mr J. E. Brown asked if Messrs Gillies, Fitzherbert, and Curtis had resigned their Superintcndencies. Mr Stafford replied that they would resign them either beforo or at the termination of the session, therein following Mr M'Loan's example in 1809. The House need bo under no apprehension that Superintendents would be in the Government. Mr Fox reminded the House that in 'Mr M'Loan's.'caso he had not, liko Mr Stafford, made a positive declaration against Superintendents being in the Ministry. He hoped that Messrs, Curtis, Gillies, aud ■Fi.tzhorbert would resign their Superintendences before tlio end of the session, an if there was anything wrong in Superintendents being in tho Ministry, their presence th,ere must be especially mischievous during the session, when their oftices would enable them to bring a large amount of pressure to bear. [We are obliged to .omit a sentence stating! points on which Mr Fox congratulated Mr Stafford, as the telegraphist has made an unintelligible h;ish of it.J After some further debate, an Imprest Supply Bill of £50,000 Consolidated Fund, and £20,000 Defence Loan, wag passed through ail its stages. Mr Gishomo has resigned his scat for Egmont, and the writ for a new election haa "icon issued. Our own correspondent telegraphs : — "It is expected that Or Pollen will go into the Council and join the Ministry. Tt is expected that Mr Stafford-will be Native Minister,.Mr QurtiH Colonial Secretaiy, and that Immigration will be made a special portfolio, under Mr Fitzherbert.
