The United States mail steamer Nevada, in charge of Pilot louden, took her departure yesterday afternoon for Honolulu v'nl East Coast Ports, with the American and European niailH, and a goodly number of pastscnfern for all ports. Mr J. Darling, Managing Engineer for the llarbour Company, is a pasaeiigor by her <n route for Europe, his mission being to secure an addition to their fleet. The p.s. A large black bull whale was captured on Saturday last in Blucskin Bay, and successfully towed into Waikouaiti Bay on Sunday. The "monster of the deep" is estimated to yield six tv is of oil, which ia worth something like £.'io a tun. The fortunate owners of the prize—T. Pratt and party—expect to net the handsome sum of £200. Large numbers of the townspeople visited the whale during the day on Monday, which, at low water, could bo seen to advantage. The Maoris mustered in strong force, evidently waiting until the whale was cut up, when their jubilee feast would commence, all the accessories for cooking having been brought on to the beach. We must confess that no one envied them the feast they awaited with evident longing.—Waikouaiti Herald.

A project is said to be in contemplation for establishing a line of tug-propellers in the Strait of Magellan, to enable sailing vessels to avoid the longer and more dangerous circumuavigation of Capo Horn. The passage of the .Str.'iit by sailing vessels lias seldom been found practicable, but with propellers furnished with intelligent pilots, the diflicultiea of the case could bo readily overcome.— Exchange Paper.
