WASTE LANDS BOARD.

A meeting of the Waste Lands Board wan held on Monday. Present: Mr Thomson, tbe Chief Commissioner, in the chair, and Messrs Reid and Hughes.

The following letter from Messrs Cargill and Anderson was read :—" We hereby agree to the cancellation of 20,000 acres on our run, No. 199, and opening the aamo for sale, under sections 83 and 123 of the Otago Waste Lands Act, I860." The following is a communication from Mr W. J. M. Larnach, acting manager and attorney for the Otago and Southland Investment Company :—" Referring to an application made this day by Messrs Cargill and Anderson, for the cancellation of twenty thousand acres on their run, 199, I hereby concur and approve of such cancellation." It was agreed to open 20,000 acres for sale, under terms of the ,83rd and 123 rd sections of the Waste Lands Act, 186(5. At the meeting yesterday there were present —The Chief Commissioner, Mr J. T. Thomson, in the chair, and Messrs Reid and Hughes. Mr James Baird applied to purchase section 2 of 85, block VI., North Harbour and Blueskin, at 10a per acre. It was resolved that the land be sold by auction at the upset price of 10a per acre. Mr Henry Connell applied to have sections 102 and 103, Otepopo, put up for sale at 10s per aero. It was resolved that applications be received for the land, and that it be sold by auction. Messrs Connell and Moodie, for Mr T. Low, applied to purchase 92 acres on run 350. The application waa approved. A report was read from Ranger Irving on the fence erected by Maitland Bros., enclosing the unsold land in Stuart Hundred.

Mr John Cargill applied to purchase 10 acres of section 3, block XIII, Dunedin and East Taieri District, to complete hia property. It was resolved that the land applied for be sold at public auction as land of special value, having been so l.jng withheld from sale, and at the upset price of £1 per acre. Survey expenses to be added to the upset price, and to be paid by the purchaser. The district officer at Clyde returned the coal lease prepared for Messrs Wrightson and M'Gee, being unable to get their signatures thereto. It was resolved that the Crown Commissioner should take action against them for illegal occupation, and that the ground l>e afterwards advertised as open for application. Messrs G. G. Russell and Co. applied for a ri-fund of the amount paid for deficient acreage on section 24, block IX,, Oanraru district. It was resolved to recommend the Government to refund the amount. Messrs Connell and Moodie for Mr George Hay, applied to be allowed to have section 29, block 111., Glenomaru, surveyed by the district surveyor, and put up for sale at 10s per acre. The Board had no power to do so, no proclamation having been issued. Mr Stephen Rowe applied for permi'ision to prospect for coal for six months on coal reserve, block V., Tuapeka East. Permission waa granted for three months. Mr William Price wrote asking for information respecting regulations for obtaining land for plantations. It was resolved that a copy of the regulations should bo Bent to him.

Mr Henry Connell, on behalf of Messrs W. H. Teschemaker, CL M. Webster, and Robert Campbell, junior, applied for an extension of the time of survey of the 10a an acre applications in Kauroo, Marewhenua district. It was resolved that the district surveyor be advised of the necessity of having surveys completed within the prescribed time, and that he

bo referred to clause 5 of the Survey Regulations.

Messrs J. W. Robertson and Co. applied for permission to form a tram-road through the town of JKinloch, according to a sketch submitted. Permission to do so was granted till the ground was required for sale, and no compensation be then allowed.

Mr Andrew Thompson wrote stating that he had selected 25 acres of laud in Hawksbury Bush, in terms of a resolution of the Provincial Council. He was requested to apply for another spot, as the land he had selected had been applied for previously, and waa under process of survey. A telegram was received from Mr J. M. Kinaston, requesting lhat the decision in the proposed sale of land to Messrs C&rgill and Anderson be postponed for throe weeks. Tlio telegram was read and considered in connection with the application referred to.

Messrs Cargill and Anderson applied for the 20,000 acres of land in the Tevint district, which they had agreed to open for sale on Monday, and also forwarded a letter in which they agreed to have their lease suspended in terras of the Goldfields Act. The application was received and registered, the Chief Commissioner not voting, and Mr Hughes protecting against the applicants heing allowed to make the survey.

Mr Brown objected to valuation for improvements being allowed on section 09a. block XIV., Glerikenich. Resolved —That the Board is of opinion that this land is of special value, it having been impr )vcd by buildings, &c, that the sale proceed under the 64th section of the Waste Lands Act, 18GG, and that the valuation for improvements be added to the upset price.

Applications, as under, to purchase agricultural leases were approved of:— E. Malonc, section 8, block X., Tuapeka east; R. Matheson, section 72, block IV., and section 5, block XIX., Shotover; D. Matheson, section 18, block XIX., Shotover; It. Matheson, sections 57 and 58, block TV., and section 10, block XIX., Shotover ; Herbert and Co., section 3, Block VII., and section 10, block X., Waitahuna east; Mr William Tyson, sections 10 and 17, block V., Tuapeka east ; Mr R. Matheson, section 12, block IV., Shotover.

Messrs Pierce and Washer wrote, stating that the Waste Land report, in tho Witness, referred to a matter concerning them and Mr Caleb Pongee Jisa "dispute" between Dongee and them, whereas, wrote they, the dispute was all on Mr Dongee's side.
