Sailed.—Rangitoto, s.s., for Lyttelton. Nkw Plymouth, July 2nd. Arrived.—Taranaki, s.a., from the Maim- | kau. It was too rough to communicate with ' her up to noon. Grkymouth, July 2nd. Arrived. —10, from Melbourne. Hokitika, July 2nd. Sailed. — Zephyr, brigantine, for Melbourne. The schooner Result, from Waikouaiti, arrived yesterday forenoon, and passed Port Chalmers on her course towards Duncdin. The h.h. Phoebe sailed for the North during the afternoon, with 14 passengers and n considerable cargo, including 11 jarrah logs for the Wellington patent slip. There was no appearance of any ship from Home or Foreign ports at the Heads yesterday. Whales are again appearing on our coast. Two bulls have been caught within the last two days—one oil" Waikouaiti, on Monday, by Mr EHis's party, who towed it to the trying-down works there. The other was secured yesterday morning, a few miles south of the Heads, by Mr Bradshaw's party of bay whalers. In the latter instance, the whale wasobserved at daylight, when the boats gave chase, and by eleven o'clock in the forenoon had the fish towed in to the Maori kaik, a distance of about live miles. Cutting in was to commence yesterday afternoon, and it is expected that five tuns of oil will be the product of (ffich whale. Ellis steered the capturing boat off Waikouaiti, and Jamie Wallace "(a Kanaka) that of Bradshaw's off the Heads. The late heavy seaa setting in on the const hiive caused the whales to take to sea, as none have been observed close in shore for about three weeks. Now that fine weather has set in they have returned. Independent of our bay whaling boats, a vessel iittcd out for the purpose ought to pay well, aa during the last nine months the coast in places has been black with the monsters.
