EMIGRATION FROM SCOTLAND.

The following copy of a letter from Dr Feathcrston to Mr Galbraith, of Messrs Patrick Henderson and Co., Glasgow, the agents of the Albion Shipping Co., and a copy of Mr Galbraith'ii reply, are of considerable interest :— London^ 27th April, 1872. ; My dear Sir—No final arrangement for a ship fi-ora Dundee on the -6th Jnne has yet been come to. As most of the emigrants from the north of Scotland wish to go to Napier, it was intended that the vessel should touch at that port first, and after landing the emigrants proceed to Otago. Should there not be a vessel from Dundee, the emigrants "will embark at 'London. ' v ' The Hydaspes may possibly be laid on for Otago on or about the Cth June. Mr Macandrew is anxious that a vessel should proceed direct to the Bluff, but at present I seeiio chance of procuring a sufficient number of emigrants for that port. \ ' \ As I see no reason for granting you betterterms than I am giving Messrs Shaw, Savill, and Co., and as it is cheaper to bring the emigrants up to London' than to pay, as in the ease of the William Davie, £14 5> per statute adult, I don't iml myself justified in chartering the James JST. Fleming. - Yours faithfully, ' (Signed) LE. Featttbbkton; J. Galbraith, Esq. . Glasgow, 29th April, 1872. My dear Sir—l am obliged bjr your prompt reply to my note of 2Gth insf., my troubling you with which had no"object towards.your chartering the James Nicol Fleming, but. merely for ray guidance in reeardto arrangements for this vessel's outward loading, and these I will vow be enabled definitely to make. : I have already stated to you the reasons why passengers to New Zealand can be conveyed fromXondon more cheaply than from Clyde. JL have had a good deal pi ence in this way, and wontd: much' prefers £13 per head, with the wliole trade, front London to New Zealand m*my Jutntls, 1-th&n £13 10s with the very limited trade from J Clyde. ' ■.*■ ,<'-\ It is unfair to contrast Messrs Shaw, Savill and Co.'s two years' contract rate of £ 13, with £14 0s paid per ship >WUujam;Davie,? inasmuch as they niade a cojicesaibn of'l,^ for the whole passage', money; being paid iii this country—a concession 1 ofiered :to follow, and which -would have reduced the rate per William Davie! to £13 ,108. ; More-; over, with a similar contract;taS.,ili>., and Co.'s, you could hare luid the pasaengers by ihis ship at t tl3 JOs. So,, in. judging,as to the relative cost of sending Scotch, passengers for Otago direst from .Clyde, .onvkr. London, there is only an amount of 10s in gross passage to be put against ttlfie?f6rmcf] > ' - •''■ " I Xam sorry that one long connection with' Otago emigration should ,be interrupted, but;, we can conduct this business onlyt in, one;* way—by having Ute.best of -everything—' ships, outfit, prt»viisioiMi|,-captouiß,:and:'O^if; cere—and for, this, andl, keeping in Yjew.aU. the risks attending the conveyance ofpa*^ uengers, £1310« per heaci is,*rpoor rorawneration. I believe yon have alreaayaufficieutly tested timt no respectable and responsible firm will do it even at that fignre-—[i;«. firom' the Clyde, Ed.; Q.l>.T;]~l am, &c;-. : '•-' , (Signed) Jaukh Galbraith. Dr Featherston, • • -1 - ;i;r J* ; Agent-General for WewZealnnd. < • ■■: ; Wemay add thftt 10. per head, the actual a*iaount in dispute, will not cover the cost of the coaveyance of^the amigtatttsfrom Scotland to London.
