Sir—l have Avaited patiently, expecting that some one connected Avith the University^ or at least the Professor who is mentioned in such disparaging terms, Avould notice the attempt Avhich has been made to place both himself and the University in a degraded position. Of course, Aye Avho reside on the spot can afford to treat Avith something like contempt the assertion by Dr Lindsay that the Otago University is only "on a par with the Mechanics'lnstitutes of Great I'ritain." But, unfortunately, the large and influential class amongst whom the Edinburgh Medical Journal is so extensively circulated—its medical readers especially—in the absence of our local information, wdl most assuredly be misled. From my oavu personal knoAVledge of the position occupied by Dr Lindsay, and the authoritative character of the journal in AA'hich his misrepresentation has appeared, I think it imperative that some official notice of the matter should be taken by the Council of the University, or the professors as a body. It rests Avith them alone to erase the stigma placed upon the status of the University by Dr Lindsa}'. I tiust, therefore, that the outgoing mail will carry some official communication to that gentleman to withdraw an allegation so utterly groundless, and so very offehsive. Although the University of Otago is in its infancy, ifc has been handsomely endowed, and has a home in a building Avhose architectural excellence Avould adorn any University toAvn in Britain ; nor will any k of the alumni hereafter feel ashamed to point to their Alma Mater in the city of Dunedin. Surely, then, some official voice will be raised against the circulation of so base a calumny in the country which Aye still call "home."—l am, &c, M.D.
