A VINDICATION.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir—l trust that lam not asking too great a favour in soliciting a little space in your paper for the purpose of setting myself right Avith my friends and public in general on a point Avhich affects my good name and self-respect. First, I have heard that it has been rumoured that I got compensation from Mr Reichelt for the loss I sustained by the fire caused by him on the morning of the 13th. of June, 1871. I beg to state that this is not true. I did not ask for any compensation, nor did he offer it.
I havo also heard that it was reported I was going to occupy the rooms over his shop. That I also deny.. Mr Reichelt did offer them to me, but I Avould not have anything to do with-a house that was built with money got at the risk of a Avoman's character, even though it should be a brick building, a fancy bazaar shop, and the proprietor himself a fancy toy man.—l am, &c, M. C. Cane. Central Registry Office, Princes sfcreefc, June 28th.
