MAYOR'S COURT.

Thursday, 27th June. (Before His Worship the Mayor, and R. H. Leary, nnd James Black, Esqs., J.P.s) Drunkenness.—John Alfred Bailey and Daniel Douglas were each fined ss, or failing payment, to be sent to gaol for 24 hours. Mary Farra was ordered to be imprisoned for 14 days, and for indecency, for an additional term of three months. Elizabeth Farra, the last prisoner's mother, was fined 40s, or, in default, was sentenced to be imprisoned for 14 days. John Campbell was fined 10s, with the alternative of 24 hours' imprisonment, and for obscene language, was mulcted in a similar penalty, with a like alternative.

Rehearing.—The cross charges Mayne v. Roy, and Roy v. Main, for assault, came on for a re-hearing. The application to rehear them had been granted a week ago. Fresh evidence was now given by Sergt. Neil, Constable Anderson, and a witness named Blood. On the last occasion the charge against Roy was dismissed, and Mayne was fined £10 and costs. The Mayor now sat on the Bench, in. addition to the ! Justices, who presided when the cases were last heard. Mr E. Cook appeared for Mayne, and Mr Stewart for Roy. After evidence had been given, Hi 3 Worship said that the Bench was of opinion that the judgment must be the same as what had been given previously. The Justices who had tried these cases were decidedly of that opinion, and he quite concurred with them ; indeed, he thought if he himself had tried the matter, on the last occasion, he should have inflicted imprisonment without the option of a fine. The evidence as to who was the first to strike the other was very conflicting, , and the Bench was compelled to put it aside and look upon the results. While Majne had only a trifling blow on the-nose, Roy had been most brutally ill-used, and the conduct of Mayne was most callous and hard-hearted. The charge against Roy was dismissed with costs, and in the other, Mayne was fined £10, witli the option of two months' imprisonment, half the fine to go to Roy. Six weeks was given to Mayne to pay the fine by instalments. His Worship stating that time Avas given not on accourt of Mayne himself, but because they did not like to send him to prison on account of his wife and family.
