Sailed.—Rangitoto, 8.8., for Melbourne, 4 p.m. _ The Circular Saw Company's s.s. Phoebe arrived in port from the North at 9.10 a.m. yesterday. She left Onehunga on the 24th ult., but, like the Taranaki, did not cross: the Manukau bar until the 28th, owing to a strong S.E. gale ; arrived off Taranaki on the 29th ; left same day, and reached Nelson on the 30th ; sailed again, called at Picton, and arrived at Wellington afc noon on the 3lsfc ; left at 5.15 p.m. on the 3rd inst., and arrived in Lyttelton at 11.30 a.m. ; left again at 1 p.m., and arrived as above. From the Manukau to Cape Egmont she experienced most boisterous weather, with heavy rain. Thence, until 4 am. yesterday, had light variable winds and fine weather, when strong southerly winds sprang up with thick weather. Mr Mockman, her purser, handed us our usual northern files on arrival. The brig Fawn sailed yesterday _ forenoon for Lyttelton, with part of her original cargo of sugars from the Mauritius. ...... The ship Achilles for Newcastle, in ballast, : was towed to sea by the Geelong yesterday forenoon. The Port Chalmers Dock.—The following Report by His Honour the Superintendent, on the Stone Graving Dock in course of construction at Port Chalmers, is pub., lished in the New Zealand Gazette of the Ist inst:—" WeUington, 18th. August, 1870.— Sir—With a View to its becoming generaUy. known that vessels of Her Majesty's Navy as weU as of .the mercantile marine, frequenting these seas, can be docked and repaired in New Zealand, I have the honour to request that His Excellency the Governor may be advised to call the attention of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to the stone graving dock now rapidly, approaching completion at the Port of Otago, the dimensions of which are as under :—Depth of water at dock sill, ordinary tides, 19ft Oin; do do, spring tides, 21ft; do do, neap tides, 17ft 6in ; length of dock, 330ffc ; width, above, 68ft; do, below, 4lft; do, where ship's bilge would be, 43ft. I may add that the dock wiU be ready to take in vessels in January, 1871.—1 have, &c, J. Macandrew, Superintendent of Otago. The Hon. the Colonial Secretary, Wellington."
