The week has opened quietly, and the business carried through as yet has been unimportant, the partial holiday yesterday, and the outgoing mails to-day, occupying general attention. There is a better country trade now doing, but the disposition among second houses' and traders seems to be to keep stocks as low as possible, consequently lew large sales are occurring in the markets, and for the moment transactions are regulated very much by the requirements of th 9 hour. In values we have nothing to note as having changed. The produce market has witnessed a moderate degree of activity, and more disposition to speculative operations is apparent. There is nothing, however, doing in the export of grain, and quotations remain without alteration,

The Oamaru Times of yesterday reports :— Wheat is without alteration ; barley, difficult of sale ; oats, slightly firmer—present quotations, Is lOd to 2s, according to sample. Flour remains at LlO 10s to Lll lis. General business dull. The Timaru Herald of Saturday last reports :— Trade of all descriptions has been very quiet during the present week, the bad weather during the early part checking more or less .the operations of retail dealers. We have no change to mark in the price of breadstuffs, wheat, oats, and barley remaining at our former quotations. The coal yards in Timaru are getting very empty, but we hear of-one-or-two cargos en route, which, on arrival,, will meet all demands. A small cargo of timber, ex Linnet, has arrived during the week, but it will not supply the present demand.
