CRICKET.

MAIUUED V. SLVOLE.

A match between 11 of the married and 11 of the single members of the Dunedin Cricket Club, came off on Saturday afternoon, and proved a very ono-sided affair. The day *v all that could be desired for cricket, and the ground, also, waa in capital condition. The Single took first innings, sending Glasgow and A. Creagh to the wictoKs, to tho bowling of Hendley and Maddock. Onlyono'or two runs had been scored before Creagh was finely thrown out, and Macdomiell took the va<«at wicket, but was also unfortunate, being bowled before he succeeded in scoring. H. W. Cairns followed, and ho and Glasgow between them effected a material change in tho score before they were parted. Both batsmen, however, were badly mimed more than once at the commencement of their innings, after which escapos they went on rejoicing and scoring, until at length, Glasgow, after making 32 by some very free play, was given out by. the umpire, though the ball having been taken before tho wicket, ho waa not out in reality, according to the strict rules of cricket. The next comer made no sign, but when A. E. Cairns joined his brother, another good stand was made. At length, however, H. W. Cairns went into one from Beal, missed it, and paid the penalty, having contributed 42 by some first-rate play. Collinson then joined A. E. Cairns, and quickly rattled up 12, when ho waa well caught by Macfarlan. Kettle followed and played steadily, and soon after Cairns was bowled by Hendley for 28, well and carefully put together. Fulton followed, and Kettle soon after was also bowled by Hendley for a good 14, and the innings soon after closed for )49, Fulton carrying out his bat for six. After a few minutes' delay, tho Married sent in Hendley and Brown,, the \ owling being taken up by A. E. Cairns an-! Collinson. Hendley waa unfortunate, but Brown played well for seven, and Maddock also played steadily for eight. Cairr.s shortly after changed ends, and off his. second ball Beal was caught for five.. Nothing else worthy of note occurred, ib being evident that tho Single had tho match at their mercy, except that when Russell and Macfarlan got together, runa came a little more freely, the innings finally closing for 54, of which the former contributed 14 and tho latter six, thus ; leaving the Single victors by 95 runs. Tho batting throughout the match was good, showing considerable improvement both in hit and defence. Much cannot be said for the bowling, however, with the exception of that of Hendley, although he was rather unlucky, and A. E. Cairns, both of whom were in good form. Tho fielding was still far from being up to tho mark, and tho match would have- been a much closer one had any of tho many chances given been accepted, tho bowlers being disheartened and tho batsmen encouraged by the numerous lete off.
