The s.s. Wainui returned from her northern trip at 7 a m on Saturday, and proceeded to Dunedin during the forenoon. The Wainui on this occasion left Lyttelton at 2 a.m. on the lOfch inst., and arrived-at Akaroa at 8 a.m. Discharged, and took in cargo, and sailed at noon for Timaru, where she arrived at 8 a.m. on the llth. Discharged cargo aud landed passengers, and left at noon for Oamaru, arriving there at 8.30 p.m. Left again at 10 p.m., arriving as, above. The Wainui made a fine run from Akaroa to Timaru under sail; but owing to a thipk fog which enveloped the land, Captain Bain deemed it prudent to heave to till daylight. Fine weather was experienced throughout the trip. Captain Bain furnished us with our Lyttelton files.

The; handsome clipper schooner Lucy and Adelaide, from Sydney, with cargo and passengers, arrived in harbor yesterday, under jury-rig, having carried away her foremast. She left Sydney on the 27th ult, with a strong breeze from the N.E. which afterwards veered round westerly and blew with great violence, causing: a tremendous sea. Heavy weather continued until making the Solander at 11 &.m. on the 2nd instant. Tho wind then died., away, and afterwards sprang up from the S.E. and hlew strong, raising a high cross s&a, causing

tho vessel to labor and pitch heavily. At 7 p.m. on the 3rd a heavy sea struck her. At the same time ber for© and foretopmast stays carried away, and tho foremast went by the deck, smashing long boat, galley stove, and topgallant bulwarks. During the nicht the vessel was m imminent danger by tho seas making a clean breach over hor,,and having no canvas to steady her. The wind continued to blow throughout-the night, and it was with great difficulty tliat tho wreck was got clear, and not till after it had chafed her 8 Ii n 0' lowing morning the weattior moderate;!, and a jury mast was "ggfd, and secured to the stump of tho foremast, with which sho made the remainder of tho passago against light easterly' winds. She anchored under Codfish Island, and twice under tho Bluff, windbound, and repaired sails, a great number of them haviug been torn. Notwithstanding the heavy weather encountered, tlie schoonor comes into Port as tight as abottle. Too much praise cannot bo given to Captain Williams for his perseverance in prosecuting the voyage with his lamo duck, and bringing her to harbor in safety. Groat loss to hor owners would have been incurred if sho had gone into Bluff Harbor for repairs., The barque Tarquin, from Now V ork, with a cargo of notions, arrived at the Heads yesterday, and sailed up the Cross Channel, when tho wind failing her, sho was unable tomtom tho ebb, and came to an anchor. Tho clipper schoonor Crest of tho Wave, from Picton, with a cargo of timber, con signed to her agents, Messrs. R. B. Martin and Co., arived yesterday afternoon, after a splendid rim of threo days, characterised by fresh N.N.W. winds. Tho Queen of tho Isles left Picton same day as the Crest, and arrived at tho Heads a few hours after her, but waa unfortunately too late for tide. # A whole of largo dimensions found its way inside tho Heads yesterday forenoon. Whon observed by the Maoris, they manned a boat and succeeded in fostoniug to it off the lower' black buoy. It was not ktiowu whether they succeeded or not in capturing tho animal when our despatch left last evoning. The whale is described as a blaok-fish.
