IMPROVEMENTS IN DUNEDIN.

We stated a week or ten days ago, that Mr George Duncan intended not ugain to have a Horse Sale Yard on hia land between Rattray street and Hi^h street, where the Commercial J^ale Yard existed until the late fire. But many ptrsors will, we believe, be glad to learn that there has been a change of plan, and that th§re will be again a j,Sale Yard, with the entrances as of old, from Rattray street and High street. Instead of putting up a shop for hituself and one for, Mr Dowse, neither.haying a depth of more than 30it, and with a grain store stretching across the back of both, the entrance w*y being between them, Mr Duncan is now proceeding with a shop and store for himself, which will b-i 2Gffc wide and 100 ft long ; hs will c ect a shop 20.-t by 30ffc for Mr D„wse ; theFe will beaw'deentrance-way left betweenthem;^ and the Sale Yard will mainly be iv line with the latter shop, but connecting up with the stables occupied by Messrs Keany and i Williams.—The foundation for the shop and store which Mr Finch is having erected for Messrs Webb, Russell, and Co. is now being pnt in ; and we believe that arrangements have been nearly completed for the filling up of the remainder of the cleared land, with shops for Mr W. Paton and Mr M'Laren.— On ths opposite side of Rattray street, Mr W. Couston, iron and tinplate Svorker, &c. has caused his wooden building to be j removed; and he is having one of brick, with a very substantial biuestone basement, erected. The building wi Ibe of one storey • the extreme height of the front being 24ft, 'the breadth 23ft 7in. and tiie depth 50ft, Ths shop windows will be large, and of plate glass ; and there will be a side door, giving access to the workshop, which will occupy the back part of the premises. The front will

be cemented j there being above the cornice an effective paneled entablature. The shop ia to have a paneled ceilingj a cornice, and the shelving will have corniced supporters! The architect is Mr H F. Hardy; and the contractor, Mr Rtddle, is to finish his work in eight weeks.— While noticing improvements iri the way of new business premises,' those of Messrs A. and T. Inglis, of George street, erected from plans by Mr R. A. Lwi son, cliim to be mentioned. The buildiag as it now stands, and it has been very recently completed, is 52ft. wide and 79ft. long; but tenders are advertised for, for adding about 20f fc. at the back, so that the place will be just 100 ft. long, by 52ft. There is a blue v istone basement, stout brick walls, and a cemented front. There are no side or back windows; and the single side entrance has an iron door. The walls are carried high, a3 parapets, to protect the'wood-work in the lantern-lights from any external fire; and the building maybe said to be altogether fire proof. The shop windows are thrown back 18in from the line of the street; the entablature being borne by a tow of iron pillars. This arrangement allows for a good .' deal of outside display of goods, if desired, without an offence under the Town and County Police Ordinance being committed, by causing goods so exhibited to " project over the footway." There are three plateglass windows, two doorways, and a broad division of the premises into three departments—General draper^, ready-made clothing, and boots and shoes. The total number of gas burners used for the evening light ng, is about 80. The back part of the building is devoted to a show-room and a workroom; by the intended addition, both these will be enlarged, and a ladies' fitting-room will be added.
