ROAD THROUGH TOWN BELT.
{To t/ie Editonoftlie Otago Dauvt Times )
I Sir—Mr Bathgate may have done wrong,.theoretically, in—.without permission asked and obtained—-making a pathway across the Town Belt; but for the following reasons, it might have been advisable for7 the -Town Council quietly to let the matter pass. ; This portion of the Town Belt is much used by pedestrians/ and children attending school. In all stales of the weather it is sufficiently difficult to keep footing, in wet weather almost impossible. The Town Council have never done anything to make this portion of the Belt passable ; all that has been done has been by private parties. In some more favored portions of the town, the footpaths are made all right, with.a few shillings' worth of gravel," contributed unasked by apparently some good Fairy or Robin Goodfellow ; but this neighborhood may be supposed to be under the guardianship of " good folks" of an opposite disposition, who will neither do themselves nor let others do. i To ease the mind of Mr i>ods, I may I state that no tree has been cut down (I j do not think even a flax bush). In byegone- times such arboricultural specimens did exist here, but no one cared to protect them. •;.■•..■■■
All classes use the new path and seem to appreciate its great convenience; and from there being a number of poor people residing on the Belt in the immediate neighborhood, who do just as they like— the Town Council notwithstanding—it is pretty evident that, if there is one law for the rich and another for the poor, it is not, in this cage, oppressive to the latter.—l am, &c.,, ; Jacques.
