PORT CHALMERS.

NOMINATION FOR MAYOR.

The nomination for the Mayoralty of Port Chalmers took place in the Town Hall, at noon, yesterday. There were about 60 persons present. The Mayor, D. Rolfe, Esq., presided.

The Town Clerk, Mr G-. Asher, having read the notice, opened the two nomination papers received, from which it appeared that Mr Thomas Tayler was proposed by Mr William Fernie, and seconded by Mr John Thomson ; and that Mr Daniel Rolfe was proposed by Mr Charles Clark, and seconded by Mr Henry Bench. The Mayor having called on the proposers, and seconders to address the meeting,

Mr Fernie said he had no desire to speak much on the qualifications of Mr Tayler for the office, for it would only be a waste of words to speak in the behalf of one so well known. Mr Tayler had plenty of time on his hands and he would fill the position well; he, therefore, had full pleas are in proposing Mr Tayler as Mayor for the ensuing year.

Mr Thomson only wished to second the proposition.

Mr Clark was not present, and Mr Dench remarked that ib was more than with an ordinary degree of pleasure that he had seconded the nomination of Mr Rolfe. At the first election he had taken great interest in his. election. Mr Rolfe had filled the chair for two years to his satisfaction,-and during his term of office he had done well, and it would be an injustice to thrust him aside for a new man. He (Mr Bench) had been an employer of labor for years^ and he never yet discharged a good servant. He, therefore, thought that Mr Rolfe deserved the confidence of the people, and that they should elect him.

Mr Taylbr said that he had the greatest respect for the present Mayor. He came forward through receiving a numerously signed requisition, which he tried his best to avoid. He, however said that any man holding the office of Mayor for two successive years was long enough, and that a new man should be elected. He had proposed Mr Rolfe last year, which he thought was only fair, Mr Rolfe having got into the routine of offioe. If elected, he would promise them faithfully to do his duty.—(Applause.) Mr BoiPB thanked, hia proposer g,nd
