DUNEDIN REGATTA.

Tho Duncdin Regatta, which was" postponed on Monday last, in consequence of the unfavorable weather, came off Saturday. The weather then could not be called favorable; but it was a great im-provement-on Monday. Tho objections to Saturday were, firstly that there was a j o w temperature, and secondly that there ■jraß a strong and puffy westerly wind. The fine fore-and-aft American schooner, lovtt Peacock, Capt. Dewson, which is lying well off tho new jetty, was very kindly placed at the disposal of tho Cornmitttc, as the starting-vessel. The schofiiiur was, perhaps, a little too far off the jetties, to satisfy those who, despite tho cold, clustered there to see the races ; but that was due to iho fact that she dragged somewhat during a very stiff breeze on Friday night. Mr 0. Given was the umpire ; Captain Dickie, starter; and Captain Bain, judge. Mr Adam, and other members of the Committee, were also present on board the schwnur. J'Aiit-oAR Hack, op>:n to all camera. First priw, f'7 ; second, L3.—Course; From inside Fla^ uliip, round flag-boat off Pelieiiet ii'i'j, past Hag-ship, and round boat nworcrt off now jetty. Mr Hill'n Q'KCii Victoria (Hill and Green) 1 Mr M'Kinnon'a Volunteer (Marscy and Wkwill) 2 Mr Goldie's Amateur (Wooda and Kelly) 3 The Prince of Wales entered, but did not appear. After a few strokes had been pulled, the stroke oarsman of the Volunteer " caught a crab" —a thing which anybody might well stand excused for doing, seeing that there was a nasty tumble on tho water at tho time. The Queen and the Amateur went on well togdlior to the fhir,'-l'oat, the Queen being the first round. The Volunteer made up well for the loss at starting; and, in tho pull back, she took the second place. Tho Queen had .about a minute's lead, at the close. Sailinu I!acb, open to all comers. First prize, LIS ; second, LIO ; third, L 7. Time allowed, oiifiininutoa ton.—Oour-e : From inside the fiig-ship, round ting-boats off J'elichct Is;iy, Grassy Point, and Vauxhall, and back to tlie ilng-sliip. Mr JfncgiU's DaunM<-:« 1 Mr Webb's OoWrecl-»r 2 Mr Mas n's GanntJnt 3 Mr Gibbn'n Golden Ago 4 Mr Street's Cy-jrici:, Mr NoiH'n Flirt, Mr Ptuersoii's Will-o'-the-Wisp, and Mr Hay's Corsair, also started. The Peacock and Helen Theresa, did not show. Tho starting gun was fired at two minutes after one o'clock ; and moat of tho boats wero £f'»t undorweigh smartly. On the run down to Peliche*, Bay, the Goldscoker — a new and handsome centre-board boat, with only a gunwalestreak round inside her —had the best of it; but the Dauntless was running in a ■way that showed she would go to tho front as soon as beating became necessary, in tlte very nasty sea which there ivas between Blade Jack's Point and Grant's Braes. The Dauntless did there make tho beat weather, and she was well handled ; the Gauntlet also came up well; but the trim Cyjznot disappointed her admirers. At tho start; every sail was more or less roofed on board er.ch of tho "boats ; but, even so, it was a question, whether tho smaller boats would bo able to carry on, when crossing from point to point. The Willo'-the-Wisp would not "stay" when off Grant's Braes, and she shot ashore or, somehow, got out of the race. After the first round, the only question in doubt was which boat would bo placed second. Tho Goldseekcr, however, stood up to the wind capitally—sho had plenty of " live ballant ;" and, although the Gauntlet was brought in capitally for the close, sho could only make a good third. The following shows the time at which each round was completed by tho four boals named :— h. m. s. h. m. b. Dauntless 1 39 CO ... 2 18 0 Goldscoker 1 45 0 ... 223 40 Gauntlet 1 40 0 ... 231 30 Golden Ago 1 47 15 ... 237 15 Tho Dauntless had to allow the Goldseeker time, but not more than threo minutes ; and tho position in the race of each of tho four, remained tho same as at arrival. Tho other boats were really out of the race before tho first round had been half done. T'.io course was about nine miles ; and the Dauntless did it in lh. lGmin. Si-'UM-Eit's Hack, for Amateurs First prize, \X> ; Kt-cmd, L 2 10s. —Course: From inside the'flag-ship, round the on ter pile of the training-wall, round flag-boat off the new jetty, and back to the {lag-ship. Mr Shepherd's Little Maid * Mr Kili'a IVinco of Wales 2 Mr Leary's Quocn Victoria also started. The Littlo Maid won easily. Scn.LKit's Race, open to all comers. First ]iri/.e, 1..~>; Eecoml, L 2._ Mr Gi'->e:i'n Queen Victoria ' Mr Shepherd's Littio Maid 2 Tho Edith and tho Goodwill also started. Oreen won as lie pleased, pulling throughout a beauliful stroke, and not, apparently, making any push, except at the start. Sur,iN<; Rack, for Watermen. First prize, L 5 • sec ml, L 2 10.1. Course : Tho same aa No. 2 ; but once round only. Mr Denham's Golden Ago * Mr Webb's Goldacoker • £ Tho winu was much lightor, and tho water smoother, than during tho allcomers' sailing match ; but there was still quite enough of a breeze; -Lne Goldseeker would probably have been frcelv backed ; but she only made a very good second, tho race being a close^ one for some distance. The WDI-o'-the Wisp started ; but sho again met with a mishap through not "staying," when off Grants Braes" and so lost all chance. lne Golden Age waa 53 minutes in going over the coime—four miles and a half. Foun-OA.it Hack, for th° Ladies' ?«>"«; First prize, Lls; second, L 7 10s. Course: The anrno as in tho Watermen's Sailing Mr "coldie's Amateur (R Bremner, G; Carey, W. Carey, and T. Wood, stroke; coxswain, Madijjan) •

Mr Leary'u Queen Victoria {Shepherd, Hul, Leary, and Green, stroke; coxswain, Hojg , 2 Mr M'Kinnon'a Volunteer, and Mr Kompthorno's Prince of Wales, also started. Mr Hogg's Prince Alfred did not show. The start was a good one, and the boats w.oro well together when the first'flag-t oat was neared. Tho Amateur was first round, and the Prince of Wales neeond. . But Roon after that, the Queen drew ahead of the Prince ; and fa capital race home, left tho Queen close up as second, tho Volunteer third, and the Prince fourth. There wero three entries for the Fouroar Race, for youths ; but tho Amateur did not put in an appearance. The lads in the other two boats pulled well and most pluckily ; the Prince Alfred being first, and the Prince of Wales second. The Regatta was, on tho whole, a very ■"satisfactory one. Only spectators wc-ro wanted ; and they would certainly have been plentiful, had the weather been somewhat less cold.
