Tho P.N.Z. and A.RM. Co.'s s.s. Airedale arrived in harbor shortly after daylight yesterday morning, with tho inward Panama mails.' The mails were conveyed to Dunedin by tho first trip of tho steamer Peninsula. Tho steamer Golden Age brought up the passengers and Panama cargo. The Airedale'left the Manakau on the 19th; called at Taranaki, Nelson, and Picton, and arrived at WeUington at two p.m., on tho 22nd ; waited tho arrival of the Ruahino, from Panama ; and left on the evening of the 2Cth. Experienced heavy adverse weather, and arrived at Lyttelton at 8 p.m. on the 27th. Discharged cargo and left at G a.m. on the 28th, and had Jino weather during the remainder of the passage. The purser has supplied us with our usual files of Northern and A merican papers. Tho ketch Emerald arrived yesterday morning from Kaiapoi, with a cargo of produce, consigned to order. She left Kaiapoi ou the 22nd, and was off Otago Heads on the 2Cth, when sho was caught in the heavy easterly gale then blowing ;. and owing to tho thick weather, stood out to sea.

The barque Eleanor, previously reported at the Heads, from Newcastle, sailed up to the anchorago with a light bafiiing wind yesterday morning. Sho left Newcastle on the 10th instant, with a light southerly wind which, on the following day, veered round to the westward, continuing from that quarter until the 20th,. when strong B.W. breezes set in. The Solander was passed at 1 a.m. on the 22nd, and Dog Island at II a.m. Bame day. Off Brothers Point the wind fell light, and hauled round to E., from that to N.E., with thick weather, and increased to a heavy gale, which lasted for threo days, accompanied with rain. The wind then changed to S.E., and continued so until her arrival at the Heads, on the morning of the 27th. Tho Midlothian aud Flying Squirrel arrived f r.-m Oamaru with cargoes yesterday. Tho Midlothian, after discharging a few bales of wool into tho E..P. Bouvene, proceeded to Dunedin.

The barque Bengal, from hence to Newcastle, was spoken by the Airedale, in Cook Strait, on the 22nd inst. The s.s. Lady Bird sailed for Wellington, via intermediate poTts, at 1.30 p.m. yesterday, and cleared the Heads shortly after 2 o'clock. About 3 o'clock she was observed making back for the Heads, and conjecture was rife as to the "reasons why," whether there had been a'break down, or some one injured on board. On her arrival in port at 4 o'clock, it was found out that no injury or accident had occurred, but that she had put back for her papers and clearance, which had been entrusted to a party to put on board, which was not done. In the meantime her papers had been taken back to Dunedin. Telegraph communication was resorted to, and the necessary documents were expected to be down in time for the Lady Bird making a fresh start last evening, Tho s.s. Claud Hamilton, for Melbourne via Northern and West Coast Ports, and the s.s. Airedale, for West Coast Ports via Bluff Harbor, sailed last evening. A number of hands were yesterday employed in caulking tho floating dock. The oakum used is spun from the tow of New Zealaud flax, procured from the estabUshment of Mr Mansford, at the Clutha.
