Bnt—Knowing as I do the interest you take in our Volunteers, I take the liberty of trespassing on your valuable space, in order to bring forward a subject of no small importance to that body. It has long been foltin Otago (and more generally of late) that the absence of a General Committee is a great want in their organization. A Committee, that is, to take tho lead in all matters affecting, and of interest to, tho Volunteers generally ; such, for inntance, as Inter-Provincial and Inter-Colonial Rifle Matches, Encampments, and the like—and more especially i.s tho absolute necesnity for such jui iit'iiiCuuoii forced upon us at the present time ; Reeiiifj that, through the liberality of tho Provincial Council, a large huiu of money (some fifteen hundred pounds, } boliwi.)) has been voted for Volunteer purposes. Now, Kir, lam not ctiunciatiu^ my own sentiments alone, but also tho:-« of a host of others, when I Hay that thu expenditure of this money should not bu entrusted to an individual, but rather that it should be at the disposal of a General Committee, of which, of course, every St;ifl-Oflicer should be an c:.\-oi!loio member. Take, say two from each Company, to by elected by ballot, together with tho several Captainn uud StaiToiTseers, \v« have at once a body which, to my mind, wotild not only command the ru.Hp'.jct and cordial co-operation of all Volunteer**, but would be of iniihitc .service to the Commanding Olfieer in a tliousand dilS'erent ways.
