A PROPOSED CHESS CLUB.

(To the Editor of the Otaoo Daily Times.) . Sik—Dunodln can now boast of many " Association.'?," " Mutual Improvement," '* Reading" ones, &c. } all aiming at apparently inculcating a love of knowledge : amusement seems to be totally overlooked. For grocers, we have fortnightly lectures ; and tlie inhabitants of Moray Place are to bo treated to music, readings, &c. 1 need not say that there are many here, who are neither grocers nor Moray Plaeo folks, who really require some amusement or recreation of a better kind than billiard-tables or tap-rooms afford. True, we have ihv Athen-.eum,

but continual reading will tire most people ; and if some amusement of an unobjectionable character bo not pi-o-vided, the likelihood is that something far from good will bo patronised. A chess club would, I fancy, be a means of providing what ia necessary. In the Athena;um, I believe a room could be had for the asking for meetings, and

appliances could bo easily furnished. I cannot conceive why we should be behind

the other Provinces in this respect. Little Southland can boast of a chess club, and I think most of the other Provinces. I hope, therefore, that the lovers of this intellectual game will bestir themselves, and get a club at once formed. I am, &c, Dunedin, 30th May. Rook.
