INDIA.
A lamentable boat accident occurred at Madras on the 23rd December. The following parsons lost their lives:—Two Misses M'lvor, daughters of the secretary and treasurer of the bank; Colonel Temple, municipal commissioner ; and Captain Hope, aidecamp to Lord Napier, ibe Governor. The bodies were recovered. Mr Bostock, the Peninsular and Oriental Company's agent, waa in the boat, and was the only one saved. Another accident occurred in Calcutta
river on Ne'VUTear's Bty. The steamer Calculta,'wilh 500 pMsengere,- sanlr, and twenty-three Europeans were drowned. The last stronghold of the King of Bokhara has been taken by the Russians. The greater number of- the besieged were killed, which has caused him to implore Itussia for pence. . Government arc taking steps to prevent future famines1 by a proper system of irrigation.
