MR CARGILL AND HIS CONSTI TUENTS.
{To the Editor of the Otago Daily Tihbs.J
Sib—ln your issue of this morning E notice an error in the report of themeeting held here the other evening, and which if allowed to pass without notice, would reflactupon the political consistency, of, theelectors of Tokomairiro.
I am reported to have said, orrasked Mp Cargill, the following :— " ' - . " Mr Forsyth asked if it was found that the papers had falsely reported his (Mr Cargill's) conduct, and that he had voted in strict accordance with promise, would netresign if the others did ?''
Lam convinced that the electors of To£omairiro would never think of. asking Mr Gargill to resign if convinced he had ful~ filled his promise. As the one who questioned Mr Cargill on this head, I hope yoit will allow me to correcfcthis errou by, stating what was said.
, I had read paragraphs from Mr.GargilTss address to the electors, previous to nomination, and with the division of th 4 Otagor : members, taken from the Daily ; Times** ,1 asked Mr Cargill to account for ihe-dis-crepancy between his- promises and Ms votes. - Mr Cargill stated that the regOEbia the Times was not to be relied. upon^Dufe iwhen asked to point out an instance where ;he had been erroneously reported, he Jailed to do so. I then asked Mr Cargill if the majority of the electors, afc public, meetingassembled asked him to resign,, would he do so ? He replied he would,, if the others did. This was.' so far below whaiwe expected from Mr Cargill, that however good-naturei we may be, he ought to give; us credit for knowing that with Mm alone* and no other, are we ia conflict. Your insertionof the above will oblige yours respectfully, _ . J. FoBSTTHi. Tokomakiro,. October 25tb, 1866.
