The schooner Mount Alexander, which has made several successful voyages to Ilokitika, returned from that port in the lbremon, proceeding direct to Dunedin. She made a good run ot less than six dviys.

The steamship Omeo, which arrived in the forenoon, left Ntlson on the Isdi insr., experiencing strong southerly winds throughout her passage. As alrea \y reported, her passengers were mnded at Llokitiku, by the steamer M lid of the Yarra, and her cargo was brought to Nelson, where it was transhipped. The mail steamer Albion sailed for Melbourne at her advertised hour on Tuesday, having the English maiL on board, and 90 passengers. The steamer Bruce, recently returned from Ilokitika, has resumed the passenger trade between Duncdin and Port Chalmers. The Golden Age, belonging to the same company, undergoes an overhaul in the interval. A letter was yesterdny received in town by the owner of the schooner Wallace, which left some time back for Hokitilci. It was dated Port Underwood, June 21 >t, at which date the schooner was there, having had to put back t'iree times from Cipc Farewell, in consequence of the severity of the weather. At the samo time the Wild Wave, the

Traveller's Bride, and about twenty other vessels, were at Port Underwood.

Boat Wreck and Loss of Life on the West Coast.—lc is our painful task (says the " West Coast Times," July 1) to record another wreck, on this occasion attended with loss of life From tho particulars furnished tjs by one of the survivors, it would appear that the lifeboat Eleanor left liivc-rton on the Oth April, for the Ilokitika, and after a pasf?:ig<; of thm; ■weeks arrived at Milford Sound, with vwry oar in the boat sprung. There they Ml in with another boat, belonging to Mr'llowdl, of Biverton. It was now blowing a «ale from the X.W., so they made some mw onrs, but could not procure any proviMiins from Mr Ilowell, as his boat was running short ; one of the passengers, however, a Mr Pay, of Riverton, sold them all the flonr lie hp.fl, some 201b.«, which made their stock in all 36lbs. On going down the Sound, they mtt the Trader, of Invercargill, and suc-ee-ded in procuring from her a 2001b bag of flour. There they were informed tliat the Ilokitika was done, and that the

Government had formed a township at the Okaritti, so they determined to go to the latter plucp. Th'-y were Attained thirty-one days in Milford Sound, and on arriving at Jackson's 13 iy, had to n-mnin eighteen days with h:\ii weather, subsisting on bread and coffee without sugar. They left there on the 12th June, to go to th'J Arnott River, but could not find it by^the dr-f-criptio^s given them, fo they m-idc for the Okaritu, where they arrived on th« I.oth, affr having suffered many hardships from want o£ provisions. At this point we will publish their own narrative : —"There we saw som« men on the beach, and we tried

to get into the river, but a heavy squall from the fouth-west coming on jest then, we broke one tif !h'' ours, find with the rc-m tirnnjr thn-e oars find steer-oar could not get the bout snflifich'lv oil' tll'f sh'Kt; to t;iky the b;ir. Wr-

Too rntmh exhausfed to j-tai.d, they were laid on the hack, and then t'u-e four men, with intn. pid bravery, and at the risk of their own lives, rushed forth into •he brenkers to re=f:u rJ Todd and Chivers. They took off th>:ir coats to put ill m mi Todd and Chivers, ior even their shirts and boots had been torn of! by th': «'.'■'!, and yd all, in fact, had lovt cvcrvtliing we had. We are sorry to add that, Thomas Hudson, and John Nicols (thr- boO, Mere both drowned. It in considorcd, by thyßc who witnessed the accident, filiuost a miniele that any were saved, asji sea like a mountain was breaking on the beach at the time. We were obliged, however, to get i:i t!mi river or stand along the co:sst towards

the Ilokitika. Ie was blowing hard from the south-wt-!>t, with every tippearanee of a (rale from the north-west, and then we should Imvff been on a lee shore tor sixty miles, and all bands must have perished. Wu heartily Ih'ink Farquhar M'D-jnald. from the Bluff, and his mates, who kindly gave us the blanket* from their beds, and, in fiiet. iliil ail in their power to relieve us. In giving publicity to the calamities th:it bf-fel us, we trust that it will caution any one from attempting such a vov.ige in an op(-n boat for the future.' "
