SEALED TENDERS will be received at this Office on or before Saturday 26th Nov. inst., from persons willing to carry Mails, as undermentioned, from the Ist January to the thirty-first December, 1865, subject to the au<3iexed conditions:— if o. 1. Between Dunedin and Port Chalmers, overland, twice daily each way. 2. do do by water twice daily each way, 3. Between Dunedin and Oamaru, thrice weekly each way. 4. Between Oamaru and Waitaki Kiver, once weekly each way. 5. Between Dunedin and Waitaki River, via Oamaru, thrice weekly each way. 6. Between Oatnvu and Morven Hills, once weekly each way. 7. The tenders marked thus * will be terminable by six week's notic; in writing, given by either the Government or the contractor. All days and hours of arrivals and departures to be fixed from time to time by the Postmaster. Parties tendering are required to describe the conveyance by which they propose to carry out the Bervice; to n»me two responsible persons who are willing to become (securities; and to endorse the tender outside " Tender for Mail Service, Ho. ." Contractors using pack horses or single horse conveyances must provide sufficient waterproof coverings for the mail bags; and contractors * using wheeled vehicles must provide secure lockers for the mails, unless when in consequence of their bulk it may be necessary to place them In the body of the vehicle, in which case no one but the employee of the contractor is to be allowed to intermeddle. For every failure, either in departure from, or arrival at any post office with the mails, a sum not exceeding one pound (£1) will be forfeited for every half hur beyond the specified time, unless it can be shown that the delay was authorised by a member of the Postal Department; and the certificate of the officer under whose •notice the irregularity comes will be considered sufficient. In case of failure on the part of a contractor in carrying out his contract, or keeping the time specified, it shall be competent for the Postmaster to procure the necessary means or the transmission of the mails, and to deduct the cost of the same from the mone\ s due to the contractor. All inaik to be t.iken from, and delivered at, the several post offices by the contractors, and contractors will bs held responsible for tha safe deliveiy of all mails entered on the way bills accompanying them. All journeys which may commence on or Wore the last riay of the eonttact, as well as services and obligations connected with the journeys, must be performed by the outgoing contractor, though after the last day named in t contract.
