Hopper This Society was established in May, 1862, for the purpose of relieving the distress of the poorer inhabitants of the colony, without reference to creed or nation. The committee have to report that since Oc tober, 1862, to 31st. December, 1863, they have relieved an average number of 35 cases weekly.. The receipts have amounted to £1583 9s 7d, and the disbursements to £1421 Is 4d. The Institution is now atfo-ding weekly relier to 40 cases, and the demands on its assistance are. continually-increasing1. The Committee, in seeking the support of Public, would point out that though as yet the Society is in its infancy, it has been the means alleviating a great deal of distress. The Committee have been limited in the 1 c they have been enabled to afford, by the scarcity of funds; but they hope, under the present circumstances of the Institution, the subscribers and the Public will assist them with the means to enlarge its useful purpose?. The Committee are also desirous of drawing the attention of the numerous Subscribers ana Friends of the Institution to the necessity of an Asylum being erected at once, so that provision may be made for the aged and infirm, and destitute and orphan children. The Government having granted a site, voted a sum of one thousand pounds (£1000) •wards this object, the Committee are desirous proceeding as soon as sufficient money can be raised towards the erection of a suitable building, the cost of which they have ascertained would be about two thousand pounds (£2ooo)—they earnestly solicit public support for so worthy an object, feeling eufe that the appeal will inesi with that hearty response so generously conceded in cases of this kind by all classes of the comma* nity. • Subscription can be placed to the credit on the Otago Benevolent Institution, Bank of New i South Wales, or forwarded to the office of the Society, Farley's Buildings, Princes street W.
