LABOR MARKET.

Mrs Alpenny reports that the labor market is still sadly deficient in the supply of good female servants. Employers are most willing to give good wajjes if they can get efficient labor, but good or bad they are scarce, and the bad preponderate. We have now come to the very dregs, as it were, of our immigrants, and a new importation will be welcomed on all sides. Good cooks for private families have been getting LI per week ; good general servants, L4O ; housemaids, L 3 5; and nursemaids, L3O per annum ,• little nurse girls, 12 years of age, command from 8s to 10a a week ; cooks for hotels, L 2 per week ; men do, L 3 JOs to L 4; waiters, 30*; waitresses, 25s per week; barmaids, up the Ci/nntry, range from L2to Li 10s per week ; married'couples from L 75 to LIOO, with rations ; Ll2O to Ll5O without, per annum : grooms and coachmen, 30s a week : gardeners, L 2 10s per week ; bullock drivers, 35s per week ; shepherds, from L6O to LBO per annum ; ploughmen, from LI to 30i per week; milk boys, JL3O per annum; stone breakers, 4s 6d per square yard.

The returns of Immigration and Emigration sinoe the last summary shew that during the month 145 adult males, 51 adult females, 28 boys, and 21 girls have arrived in Otago from places beyond the limit* of the colony, and 934 adult males, 36 adult females, 5 boys and 2 girls have arrived coastwise during the same period, 658 adult males, and 86 adult females, with 11 boys and 12 girls have left the Province for countries beyond the colony, aud 131^5 adult males, 32 adult females, 17 boys and 14 girls for other places in New Zealand.
